From memory, the zone change is at 2000 miles one way. Thus MEL/CBR-PER are the sweet spots (and of course ADL), being <2000 mi, whist BNE/SYD-PER costs considerably more as they are both > 2000 mi.

Ah, yes you're right - 22,000 vs 38,750.

Looking a bit closer to the flights as per the OP - the seat pitch is listed as 76cm on the PER to MEL leg, but 94cm on the MEL to SYD leg?

Means that the longer transcontinental leg from Perth to Melbourne is in economy, and the short Melbourne to Sydney hop is in business (ie. one of those annoying reward seats that have one leg in economy and the other in business (usually only the shorter leg)?

those seats I'd jump on!

for all the following
41,500

Perth to Adelaide
Direct +$48
via Melb $77

Perth to Melbourne
Direct + $44
via Adelaide +$81

Perth to Sydney
Direct +$51
via Adelaide +$88
via Melbourne +$80

unless you're strapped for time .... take the scenic route and enjoy the J lounge IN Melbourne (make sure you eat at the Spice Bar and drink plenty of wine)

there's definitely these interesting periods where Business traVEL begins to taper off in May or October, and the run-up to Christmas and doesn't resume often till mid-February (the two weeks as school goes back so people head back to work means many have not yet booked their new years worth of flights and dont fly til after they return to work and get settled behind the desk and for any face to face events to be put in the calendar)

a couple of weeks ago, I was searching for CBR-CGK flights.
Every option the QF site gave me was with 2 domestic flights. If it wanted to send me to QF41 from SYD, it would send me via MEL. If it wanted to offer QF39 from MEL, it sent me via SYD.
