I did promise Keith009 that I would try a W hotel.Well this is my second for the year. However it confirms I am not really a W type of person.LA is busy this week-the conference I am attending has more than 30000 delegates meaning this was the closest SPG hotel to Downtown that I could book.No problems though as it has a Metro station in the basement.
Rate was high at $US329 a night because of this though.
Booked basic king room and upgraded to a marvellous suite.Looks good but is more style over substance with little things such as not enough hanging space even though 2 wardrobes. Also not enough towel hanging space.2 large window seats but are a little high and you look straight out onto a parking lot.
We booked in on a Saturday night and the place was full of trendy young things-and this is the demographic the W is pitched at.However service is good and the Concierge got us into a booked out Nobu for our Wedding Anniversary.Money still talks in this town!
So a few pics.First the bed with typical W lighting-

A curtain separates the bed from the sitting TV area but can be pulled back-

And the very adequate bathroom-

Rons pictures make the room look a lot lighter than it is. The place is DARK, you need all the lights on during the day in the room, and as usual the bathroom has appalling light for putting on make up . I was first person up at the pool this morning ( the pool is on the roof ) so at 9.30am there was a lot of debris in the pool ( spoons, a large lantern !!! ) must have been some party last night ! Staff turned up at 10. Service is very hit and miss - there is a form to get your room serviced at a required time - I had ticked 10 to 12 for this morning - but they turned up at 2.15pm. And it is noisy - windows need double glazing.

Dark & sexy lighting? Tick.
Happening? Tick.
Rockin' pool parties? Tick. (And they wouldn't expect anyone to be up at 0930 after WET's Drai pool party hence cleaning must have been scheduled for later ;)).

The room cleaning form - agree, bizarre. Never had to fill in any form at a W, certainly not brand standard.

But other than that, all a matter of personal taste and preference. In the same way, I feel just as uncomfortable with what I consider to be rather garish and naff decor, and overbearing service at places like the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvhit Bangkok.

Personally prefer the Thom Filicia-designed W Westwood myself as I love the Westwood neighbourhood (WeHo is great, can't stand Hollywood proper with the exception of hotdogs at Pink's and the fab parties at Drai's at the W itself of course) especially the Urban Outfitters nearby that seems to have a greater selection for my size :p plus WeHo isn't all too far away for shopping and partying, though I wish they'd enforce a dress code like a few other Ws to keep the UCLA frat/sorority parties out. In fact I find the lighting a bit too bright for my liking at this W so you may wish to consider the Westwood property for your future stays in LA should you be forced to stay at a W again (unless they've responded to my numerous complaints about the bright non-brand standard lighting and hire the guy who installed the lighting at the Night in NYC) ;).... though it does take a good 15 mins to get over to the shops at BH and WeHo.

Seems like it. ;)

My fave hotel in BKK currently:
Hotel Sofitel So Bangkok - Luxury hotel BANGKOK - Official Web Site

Until of course this opens :D
W Hotels Bangkok: W Bangkok - Hotel Rooms at whotels

How is the service at the SGS Bangkok "overbearing" ??

More the style rather than "bad service" as such. I just find the staff rather much, needlessly formal and totally everywhere-esque.

Oh, you mean the bowing whenever you go in and out, and in the lift lobby, etc. I see what you mean, but I enjoy the quant "Thai-ness" of it all. But to each his own!
