Hoax: Volcanic dust meets doubter pilot!

Well I'm now glad I started with the phrase 'the puported photos'. Thanks to those AFF'ers who found this was a hoax before I did.

---
The purported photos of what volcanic ash did to the engine & turbine of this Cessna Citation are pretty horific. Shows first hand just how much damage volcano ash can do to planes, as if BA Flight 9 didn't already make this clear enough.

Volcanic dust meets doubter pilot! – Plane Talking

A small collection of photos illustrating the consequences of ignoring the hazards of flying through volcanic ash is circulating in aviation underwriting circles.

The notation with the photos reads:

Send to your friends when they complain and moan about flights being cancelled to Europe due to ash clouds…

As reported by (name and firm deleted) attached are some interesting pictures on what happens to an engine when it’s flown through a volcanic ash cloud. This is a Cessna Citation Jet (CJ2) out of Germany a few weeks ago. Luckily the other engine kept running, although sluggishly.

This is what a volcanic ash can do to a turbine engine. You will notice how badly the titanium compressor and turbine blades are damaged.

Plane Talking understands that several Ryanair 737s, an MD-11 freighter, and a small number of wide body jets flown by major European carriers have been found with traces of volcanic ash damage in their engines.

I wonder if those photos really are what they are reported to be :?: Doesn't seem like its the full/real story to me.

Yes, a little research (Googling) shows that the author of the linked article is the victim of a hoax.

Cessna Citation Engines Damaged by Volcanic Ash Hoax

Pretty poor journalistic skills used by the author/publisher. Supposedly has almost 50 years experience as a reporter but doesn't know how to verify the source material with a simple google search ... Hmmm. I wonder if someone should tell him?

Its not volcanic ash damage given the aircraft incident occurred in March in VMC conditions and the official report does not mention ash!

CEN10RA135

I do wish journalists would do their homework, add a dash of common sense, then write a story, or would we end up living in a boring world?

I would suggest its the failure of the low pressure turbine hub!

Note to journos, ash is not selective when it comes to engines, its a miracle the other engine survived intact with no damage despite having an air intake not that far away to the affected engine :) . Same could not be said of the BA 747/ SQ 747 and KLM incidents.

I've just left a comment on the article NM, because that's a pretty bad hoax for any reporter to get taken by.

Hell, I feel just as gullible myself for posting it here.

Hey thewinchester, Crikey is giving you credit!

CORRECTION: Everything in this item is correct, except for the fact that the damage wasn’t caused by the Icelandic eruption, and it wasn’t circulated by someone who was really in aviation insurance.

Thanks to The Winchester for uncovering the awful truth. The author of this hoax will be hunted down and hurled into the nearest convenient active caldera.

Oh no! Not again. Fooled by the 787 hype, led astray over the JSF, suckered by Mileage Plus, and now….(sniffle)….done in by some miserable internet hoaxer.

I’ll put a note on the top of the post. Many thanks.

Well at least a correction was forthcoming even if the research department is still on holidays!

I've been saying that for years... ask one of the other mods who slapped me about for it!

Although, there was a very good program on Air Crash Investigations in recent months when a jet sufferred considered damage, lost engines, restarted engines. The real extent was no realised until the safe emergency landing. It looked like the plane had been attacked with a sand blaster, and although this incident occurred many years ago, it changed the way flying was undertaken near volcano activity.

Just found it.. it was BA9 in June 1982.
