Volcanic ash closes Darwin airport

I am glad that some of our troops for Afghanistan got home on Thursday.

I wonder if it will stop CNS flight very soon.

The Singapore flights are all going the long way, further south than normal.

hmm. VH-YDQ, a Pilatus PC12/47E registered to the NT Police, is flying around near Darwin at the moment.

My BIL is flying SQ Adelaide - Sin tomorrow for a trip he's planned for years. Thinking the ash won't be an issue? Maybe a diversion westerly? Usually Adl - Sin flies over Darwin pretty much.

Anyone know if this is affecting internal flights within Indonesia? I have to fly to Makassar this week, and that volcano is in the general region. I've been unable to find anything so far on the airport/airline website, but that doesn't mean anything in Indonesia.

Only thing I heard was the cloud was moving south. No mention of any flights to Indonesian being cancelled.

I notice that GA is continuing to operate flights from Australia to DPS, but JQ and VA have cancelled theirs.

Is there an element of the airline equivalent of 'political correctness' in these Australian airlines' cancellations when the Indonesian carrier keeps operating? Or is the latter reckless?

BOM's maps show that DPS is not affected by the ash cloud. If anything, the Jetstar and Valuair flights between DPS and SIN were operating yesterday.
