Firstly Hello everyone. This is my first post in this forum.

My problem is that i am currently in Canada on a visitors 'visa', and i wish to have it 'renewed' to spend another 6 months here. I have been here since November 2008, and went to Europe via the US last time my previous waiver expired(may 2009)and re-entered Canada from the US (car). I am living with my common law partner(she is Australian, and has a 2 year working visa) and I have enough money to support myself here without working, and a return ticket departing from the Canada to Australia from Vancouver airport(within 6 months of a new renewal ( if i can get one)).

My question is, can i leave Canada, and go to the US for a few days when my current visa waiver will expire, then return and be granted entry back into Canada and get a new 6 month waiver without leaving the continent? (ie be granted another visa waiver?)
*Is there a period of time needed before allowing re-entry?

any help or knowledge of my situation would be greatly appreciated:)

*I realize this is just a forum, and cannot provide me with a concrete answer; but It seems there are very knowledgeable people here, and i value your opinions or comments*

Thanks for your time

hmm i would advise to take a short trip out of Canada - over to EU or something like that. But on the return - have with you print outs of bank statements and proof of accommodation etc, just to prove you are supporting yourself!
I have had this entire year off work myself, traveling all over the globe, now with 5 LAX stamps from this year in my passport i get some pretty detailed questions when i enter the US.
But to my surprise i got far hefty going over going into Canada. Ive been into Canada twice now, and on the second time i started to break a sweat with the questions i got!
She wanted to see financial details etc - of which i didnt have ( i mean who travels with current bank statements?)
Eventually i got in but ive not been brave enough to go back!

oh and welcome to AFF :)

You may need a 'Temporary Visitors Visa' and according to the Canadian Consulte website in Australia it states:
Frequently Asked Questions: Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

Where can I submit my application for TRV?
You must submit your application for TRV at an office outside of Canada located a) in the country you are lawfully in as a foreign national or b) in your country of nationality or habitual residence.

Then on the same page there is a list of residents of countries that do not require a TRV, with one of those countries being Australia so I can't assist on whether you need a visa or not. In other pages on the above site it states:
Please note that citizens of Australia and New Zealand do not require visas to visit Canada as tourists. Permits/visas are required to work, study, or establish permanent residence.

I assume you would fall under the classification of tourist as I understand you have no intention of working, studying and obtaining permanent residence

-Thank you Chrizzz, but your option does work as stated in my post-i went to europe via the US - that is the VERY LAST option i will try....

-Thanks for that Maca, but i dont think the TRV is applicable in my situation; as i would have to lodge it in my country of residence, so if i went back to Australia, my waiver would be renewed upon re-entry into Canada regardless if i completed the TRV anyway....
Please note that citizens of Australia and New Zealand do not require visas to visit Canada as tourists.
My question was:
*Can i leave Canada and go to the US for a few days when my current Canadian visa waiver will expire, then return and be granted entry back into Canada and get a new 6 month waiver without leaving the continent? (ie be granted a new visa waiver?)
*Is there a period of time needed before allowing re-entry into Canada?*
(Obviously, i understand that i can be refused entry depending on the discretion of the border staff to either country)
Thanks again for your time

You should call the Canadian visa people, or consulate. They are very helpful, and you don't wait that long on the phone like the US !!

I had some friends in Canada while I was there, they did border crossings to the US just to get another visitor visa. That was Jan 2009. Not sure if things have changed now

Thanks snow yeti....do you know how long they were over the border for?
i will probably end up calling the Canadian visa peeps anyways....

They went overnight to get grog (cheaper at the time with the bad dollar)
and returned :)

Stayed at some hotel near the border ...
