Hi there

Anyone know off the top of their head if Australian passport holders don't require a visa for Japan and can stay 90 days, like a NZ passport holder ?

Thanks

Correct. It's not a problem at all, you'll get a sticker in your passport and be through very quickly.

As long as the trip follows the normal visit/tourism/holiday deal, no visa required.

They'll scan your passport and take fingerprints/photo (as in US). The computer will print a sticker which they put in your passport which has the arrival and latest departure dates allowed and a barcode. They will staple the departure part of the immigration card to the same page.
On departure, they will remove the departure card, scan the barcode and stamp a departure stamp over the sticker.

May ot be a sticker! Last time I went there, I got a loose bit of paper, bit bigger than a postage stamp. I glued it in myself

When was that? Which port?
I've had 1-3 trips to Japan (entering via KIX, HND or NRT) per year since 2006. Have always gotten a sticker

Worth noting it's not uncommon for first time arrivals, or those returning to japan after an extended stay away, to have their bags checked by customs on arrival (after passport control).

It's a fairly quick check, but make sure you don't have anything illegal... like even some of the most basic over-the-counter medicines we get here are banned in Japan.

I received a sticker in my passport last month when I arrived via HND.

Scott.

Such as what ? Voltaren ?

Things such as Vicks inhalers (for your nose) are banned... along with other 'stimulants' such as sudafed or cold and flu tablets containing sudafed. Any drug containing codeine is also banned (so stuff like panadeine, or panadol plus codeine). Some more info here: American Citizen Services | Embassy of the United States Tokyo, Japan

I can't find anything specific for Voltaren... only a 2007 question on the internet... apparently Voltaren is/was a prescription medication in Japan. Not sure how that goes for you bringing it in as a passenger (unless you have a prescription) or indeed whether the rules have been relaxed in the meantime: I need an anti-inflammatory medicine - japan-guide.com forum

Hmm, that is interesting since I will be in Japan in winter! Perhaps turning it around, what is allowed for cough/cold medicine?

I'm guessing the sudafed PE would be ok? (not that they really work :() Stuff like cough mixtures with codeine would be out. Even regular panadol was behind the counter last time I was in Japan... and it was really expensive!
