Virgin Weighing hand luggage

Of course, a lot of this would go away if they just gave you a checked bag for free. I think a lot of passengers would prefer to just check the damn thing and not have to worry about fighting for the overhead lockers or dragging the thing around the airport and onto and off of the plane.

I have no interest in checking luggage at all unless I am taking dive gear with me.

But do you think that's true of the majority of passengers bringing large carry-ons into the aircraft? Remember, we're a different breed on here. I think a lot of the passengers are doing large carry-on solely for the purpose of avoiding the fee.

Given that there is no fee on QF I think most people want to be Ryan Bingham and whoosh through the airport not waiting for bags...

.....Boy she must get a lot of abuse to talk to me that way when I wad in no way complaining or aggressive towards her. I knew my bag was under the weight and size thresholds so I had no reason to be concerned about her "weighing" it. In fact I was quite expecting to have it checked. But her response really was extremely defensive and even aggressive as if I had lodged a serious complaint about being weighed.

yes she must. 10mins spent one day at syd in the security screening Q revealed quite a lot of people, whinging making smart $&@ remarks and arguing over the normal stuff. Take out your laptop, change from pockets etc...it's quite surprising how often people feel the need to make rude and unnecessary remarks. Although you were quite nice she's probably had 50 people say 'it's fine! It's under....ok!' that day.

I remember being stuck behind a lady who had a restricted item in her bag while passing through security. Something sharp I guess. You should have see the production she put on, her argument? It was a gift and therefore should be allowed into a restricted area. She just would not let it go.

Yes. People will happily spend $20 on lunch that day but will not cough up an extra $8 when booking their fare fir checked baggage. They'd much rather run the gambit and risk getting charged $20 when it's offloaded. priorities are weird.

If just single or return flights from one destination to another the need to go over the limit is a little hard to understand when you know what you paid for... When i travel around Europe or the world and have like 15-25 flights over 6-10 weeks and only a few of them are on LCC's and the rest on full service carriers that let me take on more, well obviously i am going to struggle to be able to keep a supply of that many clothes and nick nacks and booze and other things down to 15-20kgs or then pay hefty baggage charges when only 4 out of the 20 flights are under that tight of a restriction ...

I am just used these days when flying on RyanAir or EasyJet or any of the others that my checked bag will usually be over the limit when i arrive at the airport and so i progressively take out several items of clothing and put them on and my heaviest pair of shoes for the trip etc until i am under the limit.... I never weigh anything on scales before leaving the hotel or home... I also have a US army camouflage jacket with several large pockets which is also very handy for putting guide books and all sorts of heavier stuff when touring or just for the flight or even just to get through security... Using a strategy like that to find ways to carry the heavier luggage items on your person usually gets around all these pissy, annoying rules....

The fact is on all these LCC flights in total i am over the weight limit i've booked in at and i keep surviving... Like the times i keep my camera on to take photos when taking off/landing, even though its clearly doom and gloom stuff to have ANY electronic item turned on... How i and everyone else keeps surviving I don't know, but there you go... Just find ways to roll with it i say, but don't pay extra if you can absolutely help it...

Annoying coughpy screening/security procedrues (and their inconsistency) is another thing entirely!!!! grrrr :(

Normally you'd be right, but the nature of the road warrior is changing, which is compounding the current problem.

The typical road warrior (associated mostly with the business traveller) realises the value of no checked bags. You can go straight to the lounge, you don't have to wait at baggage claim, and the agility to just move without waiting or worrying to reconnect with your checked bag is amazing. Fly Ahead and flow forwarding are targeted based on this, and people who fly a lot for their job now shave minutes off their work day due to it (and their bosses know it too).

It doesn't help that baggge reclaim is generally getting worse, not better, and in general around the world the whole baggage claim process is treated with much contempt and disrespect by the airlines.

Road warriors are pushing the limits since technology has enabled them to be a walking office, complete with laptop an wardrobe. Hence everybody has acquired the rollerboard - briefcases only aren't the go anymore. A plane - no matter if a 737 or 767 - can't fit all bags in the overheads if everyone takes on a rollerboard.

Laptops get smaller, but most people carry the same size bag. This isn't about to change now, though we're still not as bad as in the USA.
