Obviously this has been flagged before, however the story gives some more details on the refurbs; including the expansion to upstairs of the Sydney Lounge and the extension of the pier to fit more A330s.

The only drawback is the following comment about the Sydney Lounge upgrade:
The renovation is expected to necessitate a partial lounge closure until works are completed, with the lounge due for re-opening in the first quarter of next year

Virgin ups the flash factor with Sydney, Melbourne terminal revamps

Great news and it's nice that Virgin is spending $$ where it's needed

I like the clear and concise dates given!

Work begins on the Melbourne terminal revamp next month and is expected to be completed by mid December.

While the airside Sydney works began at the start of the year, work to extend the aero-pier begins now and should be completed by the middle of next year.

The Sydney lounge redesign has begun, but the physical remodelling works begin in earnest about September.

The renovation is expected to necessitate a partial lounge closure until works are completed, with the lounge due for re-opening in the first quarter of next year.

Will they also be renovating every other airport terminal they fly in and out of? Because if not passengers will have an inconsistent experience. Seems they still have a LCC mentality. FAIL.

Am I doing this right?

I think you've pretty much mastered it. :)

Does anyone know why VA refuse to use the aerobridge at Gate 12 for the A330 in Melbourne? I came in on Saturday from Sydney, and again, those bloody stairs were in use, despite the bridge being 6 feet away. I've never seen it in use for the A330 including the many flights I've had on that service.

Nope, they are renovating their busiest airports and lounges, and given than BNE is fine they are doing it right

Maybe its not designed for an A330 in terms of the guidance system.

Forgot to include that they need to do all airports over one night so that there isn't any time delay in the launch.

Virgin: what a fail... renovating your lounges and buying new planes... why don't you just invite more miners into your lounges and keep using 747s and 767s from 25 years ago to ensure your customers receive a consistent product.

Lets all be smartarses then!! Jesus christ is there a need to be like that, people on here, including myself are a bit confused, as to what their actual product is. THEN we get smartarses putting up posts like that, not sure if it was directed at me, as my posts have been inquisitive, or factual, if it was, pfffft to you. If not, carry on

As above, I'd momentarily thought I had slipped through a wormhole and ended up in primary school again. Can't people just express their opinion without that kind of immature taunting? So what if a few people are or aren't in love with all things DJ? Who cares, get over it. Now back to topic...

Excellent suggestion!

Interestingly, the ceilings depicted in both the the Fairfax article and a twitter image posted by Will Horton (yfrog Fullsize - http://yfrog.com/h292221841j) do not have the 'wave' pattern used in the lounge refurbs (and the new 777 seat fabrics). I thought this design element was going to be some sort of 'signature' for DJ so I'd assumed it would turn up in terminals too.

Personally I think the rendering depicted with the Fairfax article looks terrible. With white floors, ceiling and seats it would tend to feel like you're strolling around in some perpetual blizzard. But with such a low resolution image perhaps it's hard to get an accurate impression. The black seats and dark carpets in the twitter pic lend some desperately needed contrast.

But I think any move is a positive, DJ's terminals definitely lack the "class" feeling that some of QF's facilities have. Not owning their own terminals probably makes that a bit harder but a refreshed T2 at Sydney is certainly something to look forward to.

The Fairfax impression is not like any airport I know.
Almost no seats, no shops, just a vacant space.

I hope you don't mind if I disagree,I like the idea of white color scheme,(Reminds me of the debate about the new livery 12 months ago!) I find the current Sydney
terminal (well the piers at least) dark and uninviting with an almost dingy feeling.I agree that some contrast would be needed though.
Cheers

There's quite a reasonable number of seats down the back of the rendering, as well as along the sides - although they certainly blend in to the background. But I agree that the open space depicted seems extremely excessive.

And a bit sad to see the moving walkways are going - not because they're particularly useful, but because they always remind me of Ansett.

Maybe thats why they're going...:( in any case I will be sad to see them go too. I shudder to think what all the kids who normally play on them are now going to play on. To me that artists impression looks like an early concept drawing you see on the side of housing developments. Which ends up being nothing like what eventuates. I think we can all look to Brisbane terminal for a more accurate idea of whats to come. That one is all white terrazzo.

I think it would be important to remember that 90% of the time an airport terminal is packed, hence the bustle and "messiness" needs to be balanced by the terminal itself. Clean, white, born with a pencil in my hand all that kind of stuff.

I fully support MEL getting a major revamp - it's still designed for the early 1990s as the layout basically hasnt changed since it was the AN terminal. Especially the luggage carousels and the airside areas need a big, big re-do.

I happened to be in the Sydney lounge tonight and looked up, and back to where the offices used to be.
Saw a familiar roof pattern being installed.

Maybe we can track this like OOL

For location info, head up the ramp to the small podium near the windows, looking back above the main food stand.

Rolling thru the Sydney lounge this morning.
Upstairs roof looks near complete. A couple of under construction curved walls also visible.

No photos as I was in a rush.
