What makes you think that VA would even look at this route? Didn't work when VA was a full service carrier.

The domestic feed VA has??? also the fact that most Aussies would rather fly VA or JQ opposed to AirAsia. You have also failed to take into account velocity

Virgin needs to do something with DPS the are losing market share to JQ.

I think MCY-DPS was a missed opportunity.

Outside of that Darwin, Hobart are a few options.

Reinstate ADL for starters.
Flew VA to DPS at least a dozen times and was always packed.
Now we have 2 daily coughstars and some other ULCC’s
