I will click over to platinum for the first time on Friday. The return flight on monday ( if credited in time) should be platinum so I am expecting the red carpet treatment ;)
Your new status on the Monday flight, I don't think it will have gone through yet, Mine took about a week and even then I had to contact them by phone. They did it manually straight away. Good luck

Platinum is a good place to be. You've certainly earned it. IMHO the business class upgrades (subj to availability) are an awesome perk to have up your sleeve and worth planning if you can to make sure you use them. I've missed out a few times with those and have regretted it.

There's also some guaranteed freq flyer seats thingy being available for a family trip but I've never used it.

There's also the Hilton/Europcar status match with there schemes that are worth utilising if you can.

67 sectors were indeed great efforts...

I managed to get mine through double status credits for a trip to U.S. and a few domestic trips with the better half (family pooling is a constant double status offer to me), which means I actually only flew around eight to nine sectors in total to get it so it was 250*4.

Nowadays Velocity Gold/Platinum can also use lounges in the Etihad house when flying on Hainan Airlines in addition to Virgin and Etihad.

I found the Europcar and Hilton status match a waste of time. Had them both and never scored any upgrades.

I went the Hertz status match to President’s Circle and have only used them half a dozen times but upgraded every single time and hassle free.

Got to Platinum this year with a double status point run to Gold Coast. I think it is worth the effort. Besides EconomyX, I have had a few change of flights to earlier ones as meetings finished early. Recently went to UK via Etihad and the access to the First Class lounge in Abu Dhabi was great. You get a complimentary 15 Minute massage and meals via menu!

Where it really saved my ass was checking in on my return flight with two pieces of luggage. I was flying economy with 1 piece of luggage up to 30 kg. Unfortunately, I bought a bit too much and had an additional back with another 20 kg (50 kg in total) and was dreading the additional fees and was told that as I was Platinum, I got an additional 20kg allocation!

Man, was I happy to hear that. Don’t think I’ll get to renew as I have changed jobs and there is very little travel so I’ll make the most of it till May next year :)

I've been very lucky and had a few upgrades with Europcar and with Hilton (mostly in the UK) as a result of the VA status match..

As a result of status, I've scored multiple times with free Hilton full breakfasts, dinner or canapés and drinks in the Executive Lounges, Afternoon Teas etc. That's with Hiltons in oz and overseas; although the Hiltons I've stayed at in the USA were very average and much stingier with Diamond perks.

The extra Hilton Honors points as a diamond rack up too and have helped with free stays that I've now redeemed in Athens and Dubai. I think it's worth it if you can maximise the stays and hires but don't have to shell out more than you would've anyway.

It's also something that you don't get with Qantas...

Hi All,

There might be a similar thread which admin can move if they deem appropriate.

I believe there is a similar thread in the Qantas community (mostly for Lifetime statuses) but as were all on here because we get a thrill out of flying, gaining status, collecting points, finding the best deals etc.. Its good to celebrate little achievements and wins..

So....

Today after a couple of years as a Velocity Gold Member, still 4 status points away I received my boarding pass from Mildura to Melbourne today, Gold changed to PLATINUM....

I was quite chuffed, I knew todays flight would make it official, but got the slightly early status change....

Overall I don't think it is a huge change from Gold, but regardless something I have been scheming my way to with the help of double status points offers, fly buys monthly status points and this community. The big game changer for me was when the points changed from 5 to 7 points for getaway and 10 to 15 points for Elevate as most of my flights are real short flights MEL> ADL etc... and its mainly corporate bookings with best fare of the day policy...

Anyway share your way to top (for Velocity anyway) and maybe share some tips and tricks....

PS it took 67 sectors to get to platinum (plus the fly buys points)
Congratulations - I have been 2 years Platinum and hoping to get 3 as at end of August. Lots of benefits that I have managed to take advantage but one I hadn’t really valued was Hilton Diamond - booked sea view room in Sorrento Italy for 5 days at what was a reasonable cost. Arrived and got upgraded to Junior Suite - the Hilton App that day suggested a difference of USD$700 per day!!!

And love the economy X.

Oh and First Class lounge at AUH even flying Y.

Thank you VA - enjoy all you have to offer.

Thats great, Ive started taking advantage of the economy X, i usually park myself down in row 29 and ask them to book out the seat next to me... usually happens, but I have enjoyed economy X the last few flights...

Ive got a bit of international travel next year so I think some of the extra perks will come in handy!

I’ve used it twice now. Once was HKG flights travelling over in Aus new year and back during Chinese New Year. Second time - not yet taken - is for early Jan next year to LA. On both of these trips cash fares were very expensive and no reward fares available (which is a pre requisite to use the benefit). For us it has saved $1000s off paying for fares, but it does require booking 6 months in advance.

Can someone please post a link to where the guaranteed reward seat benefit is documented, including the 6 month advance booking?

I manged to the do the HBA-MEL-BNE-DUD return in Business which I had booked during the double status credit promo and it netted me a nice 760 SC. Couple that with what I already had flying between PER and MEL, I finally switched over to Platinum.

This will be the first time I am anything above a Silver. Although as I hardly ever fly for work, not sure how useful the status will be but I have some international travel lined up for later in the year and hoping to use one of the better lounges.

- Make sure you use your free J upgrades, I actually had 2 unused last year due to bad planning
- Make sure you take advantage of the free Economy X
- I heard some rows are also kept for Plat but maybe someone else can confirm
- Try to score an upgrade on a USA flight if you take them, this is absolutely the BEST use of points

Welcome to the club!
I never seem to use the upgrades. I always want to save them for longer than a MEL-SYD flight and then I find I am on the wrong fare class or the airline upgrades me anyway or I am in a paid business! Anyone have any advice/suggestions on how they use theirs?

I use mine all on BNE-PER, with the A330 of course.

Wish I could get more...

Yep, Mrs Jase and I are both VA Plats and don’t always use ours. We try to get over to PER from ADL once a year to watch Essendon play so will go to MEL or SYD first and pick up the A330 to PER. I’ve seen some availability at various times on SYD-DPS which is not bad value and you don’t mind a 737 for 6-7hrs
