Virgin Australia partners with South African Airways

Re: VA to partner with South African Airways from PER - JNB

Give us good J award availability at good points rates sometime in the future, and I'll be delighted! But given their success rate of negotiating that with anyone except Etihad, I won't be holding my breath :(.

The average economy punter has no idea about alliances & codeshares and cares less. I work with guys who fly to many countries in business class and some don't care or have freq flyer accounts. For example some don't know (or care) that you can get QF points on a CX or EK flight.

Here on AFF & FT we are the 1% who do care & check out before flying

For many people (and business's) only 3 things matter
1. price
2. price
3. price

That 1% is becoming more important as everyday passes!

This article Airline Ratings quotes that in 1988 QF had 40% of the international market in and out of Oz....fast forward to today and it quotes that share is now only 16%. I swear that number 2 years ago was 18% - who knows  I do know that a captive and decent spending 1% looks pretty damn important with these horrendous market share numbers!

I would expect so. When SAA announced its codeshare with VA the only Virgin feeder it didn't have form the east coast was Sydney and that was of course due to the QF partnership, now that is going I would expect the SAA/VA codeshare will extend to Sydney beginning the day after the QF codeshare stops.

I have a QF Codehare flight with South African in October as part of a OW Award booking.

Does anyone know what will happen? Guessing I should call them to resolve. I heard they are going to push flying to Africa via Emirates put was hoping this booking would he honoured.

Any update on the VA/SA partnership now that the QF/SA codeshare has ended? Have a business trip to LLW later this month and was hoping to fly on VA/SA with VFF SC earn.

seriously, why don't they?

Sponsors like EY may not like that. JB seems to be on the bandwagon that the global alliance model is outdated, inefficient and ineffective.

I would fly VA via Perth to JNB. Although do not fancy the wait in Perth, even in the lounge 5 to 7 hours is too long to add to a trip@. I flew with VA in PE to JNB and J return via Melbourne and had a great, smooth flight, wonderful service and beat QF hands down. Last flight to JNB with QF a disaster with flight delays, incorrect information, mismanagement of the delay overall and had to go via Perth instead of direct from Sydney or there would have been a longer delay....I still lost two days of annual leave. Not a happy chappy. Considering a flight to JNB next year, not sure of the date yet, nor had a chance to look at prices but will certainly consider the VA option, however do want something eg SC, good point earning.

There is no VA option at present, the code share is for SAA customers onwards to VA services and is not reciprocal.
