The plastic trays are temporary, new trays are on the way! The food actually gets a lot of great feedback for taste and size. That is the trouble with two option courses and no ability to select dietary requirements, you can't please everyone. The new res system post end of Jan is meant to improve the dietary requirement issues though.

I would sure hope so! The person across the aisle managed to upend their tray before the FA had even wheeled the cart away (the FA was very nice about it and offered another meal after helping clean up!). I had heard only good things about the Y food thus far but was rather underwhelmed :/ FWIW the alternative offered was a vego pasta, no one seemed to be that interested however...

looking forward to coming home in J though! That will be a nice little step up ;)

Beware, once you've J'd it you'll not want to stick your head back through that curtain!

To dig up an old thread, I notice now on the booking engine that Saver Lite and Saver fares have "Tea/coffee/water included Food available for purchase^" in the description. So, do you still get the hot meal and complimentary beverages as you did before (e.g. flying in December 2012)?

I presume this hasn't changed - the website still says that all guests receive a hot meal. I don't think the booking engine ever showed that for the Perth flight though.

The corporate fares guide says "Complimentary food offered on Capital Connect & SYD/MEL/BNE-PER + other services.".

Thanks for the replies all. It wasn't as obviously stated as beforehand (where a notice popped up as you entered the cities), but I managed to find the answer by navigating through a bunch of links - experience>On board the flight>menu>domestic (sorry, I can't post a direct link yet).

"Guests travelling on direct transcontinental services, from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne to Perth (and return), receive a complimentary hot meal and beverage offering. Beverages include a selection of soft drinks, juice, water, tea and coffee. Beer and wine is available after midday."

Cheers.

Based on my recent experience on VA Y to PER it's "complimentary" because if you were made to pay for the barely edible "food" there'd likely be far more air-rage incidents like that guy ex-DRW a little while ago with the $10 sandwich.

Really? Funny how you see people woolfing the food down then...and has to beat the sandwich, apple and biscuit I got for lunch with QF last time I used them from PER to MEL in Nov last year.

Flew SYD-PER yesterday. The food was reasonable. I don't like the tray and the presentation though. It is not very practical and it slides everywhere, so I can imagine lots of people spilling the contents. It had a very LCC feel to it.

PER-BNE red eye yest was a cheese toastie and a breakfast bag (muffin, small water, small juice and some Jila mints)
