Competition with AA cheap fares

From Daily Telegraph

THE international airfares war being waged among airlines has intensified with Virgin Australia slashing the cost of a return ticket from Australia to New York, to $999.
The price has stunned even travel agents, who have declared the fare the cheapest they’ve ever seen for that route.
Just over a year ago, travellers were paying three times that amount to fly to the Big Apple and back.
Fierce competition among airlines, particularly on the trans-Pacific route, is fuelling the low fares which may still fall even further.

Prices are getting interesting between here and the USA...

Did anyone really pay $3k to get to New York a year ago??

Just checked the Virgin website ant saw no mention of it there. The cheapest to NY was >$1400

Are you suggesting that the media did no research before going to print ??:) I cannot replicate it on VA either

The fare is LA not NY for that pricing on VA. The dates line up to the article not the destination ?

I have tried a number of dates directly on VA but cannot come close to the Flight Centre pricing

Well I'm sure this price cutting tactic will do loads to improve the profitability of the disastrous VA international business!

But personally I am for anything that boosts competition :)

Looks like it's a Flight Centre thing.

Best you can do via the VA Website is to Newark on VX connection for $1100
