I have not had a chance to read this thread yet, however, I am currently at the Intercontinental in Nha Trang and very happy here. Overnight train tonight to Hue and then a couple of days in Da Nang

Seeing those photos makes me really appreciate that I went there 15 years ago rather than now. I guess you can say that about a lot of destinations in the world

I guess 5* isn't for everyone.

5* def for me - I refuse to stay in any accom anytime unless it is superior to our house - and we live in a very good house.

There's a time and place for every experience. Just not on my scarce vacation time.

I'm wondering if people feel the same about airline travel. ;)

I don't understand the airline travel connection you are trying to make (comfort?). My original comment related to visiting places while I could still identify which new country I was in. Obviously we have different reasons for travelling.

I think that connecting with the local community as a tourist is pretty much overstated unless you live there for a substantial period of months. As tourists we can admire the natural beauty but not really live like the locals regardless of where you stay because as tourists we have a different mindset to people trying to make a living. We have the option to escape. We don't have to stay there and try make ends meet.

The plane? Its part of the mindset. We fly into a place having experienced a comfy seat, food etc and know we can jet out again as soon as we please.

I don't care what anyone says. I am happily sleeping off last night's $3.20 coughtails and early morning fishing and snorkelling trip, by the pool. NB. I reckon the Russian Tourists here eat a lot of spit

If you haven't already booked, the Novotel in Da Nang is excellent. The executive lounge has a great spread and views of the city. You can also get cans of Biere Larue for 50 cents at the tennis court next door! The cheapest I found throughout Vietnam.

What a small world - I find a friend posting photos on FB and she is there at the same resort with ALH. She's an Aussie expat (based in HKG) - so look out, you may have a drinking buddy
