Heritage Victoria has backed the Andrews government’s application to heritage list Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway, finding that the road’s “naturalistic landscape setting” and “series of distinctive concrete road overpasses” make it worthy, in a decision slammed as “ridiculous” and “bizarre” by the state opposition.

The Heritage Council of Victoria gazetted the planned addition to its heritage register of the Eastern Freeway between Hoddle Street and Bulleen Road alongside the death notices in today’s Age newspaper.

In his recommendation to the Heritage Council, Heritage Victoria Executive Director Steven Avery has supported the Andrews government’s heritage application in a report describing the road as “a fine, intact, influential and pivotal example of a freeway”.

In a section on its heritage significance, Mr Avery found the freeway “comprises an integrated design of a naturalistic landscape setting, exposed escarpments and cuttings, with mortared infill rockwork, a broad central grassed median with elongated needle-like light poles, and a series of distinctive concrete road overpasses and bridges designed as a suite of elements to enhance the freeway experience for the motorist.”

“The Eastern Freeway – Stage One is also historically significant for the prolonged and at times violent community protests that met its announcement, construction and opening,” Mr Avery found.

Lolz, I think this must be a precursor to putting a toll on the freeway. A toll for a privilege to drive (or amble along) a classic thoroughfare.

Ha! Sadly, it's more of a c*ckbl*ck for the east-west tunnel. According to the Vic Libs, making it heritage listed would add show-stopping cost and time to that project.

Now, don't laugh. But I've actually been on an organised tour of these bridges about 10 years ago. And about 5 or so years ago I hosted a delegation from Indonesia who came out to look at these bridges specifically!

How could I have done that - it was our Friday night watering hole for a couple of years back in the 70's. I've still drop in when I'm back in Melbourne. I even had a drink & a steak at the Station Hotel and the Maori Chief Hotel in South Melbourne recently. But the best, for a bit of retro grunge, is the John Curtin Hotel on Lygon Street. It hasn't changed since I first went there when I was studying at RMIT.
