Very high surcharge originating from BKK

I am looking at booking BKK-MEL flights using QF points, and my jaw dropped when I saw the surcharge:


Anyone know what's going on? 22k THB is nearly $900 AUD per person in surcharge alone!

It only happens for ex-BKK flights. If I price a MEL-BKK return the surcharge is a lot more reasonable.

I have noticed this for JAL flights originating anywhere other than Australia (including originating from Japan!), but I don't know why. Try another airline (Malaysian would make sense for this route) if you can.

EDIT: For instance a route like this is far shorter in time, fees ($80) and points.


Other reasonable alternatives on this route avoiding using JAL seems to be Jetstar and Qantas.
