Very close near miss at Haneda just now

There's been an incredibly close near miss at Haneda - reportedly under 20 metres separation.

Currently being reported by Japanese sources and FR24.

An ANA767 was on finals and for whatever reason a Japanese govt civil service Citation crossed the flight path, passing within 20metres.

Only a couple of years ago, a Japanese govt aircraft was involved in a fatal collision at the same airfield

You can actually hear the TCAS alarms going off on the audio playback.

Certainly doesn't seem to be intentional "business as usual operations". The ANA was forced into a very late go around, climbing out sharply at almost 3000fpm.

TCAS will go off with visual separation, means nothing. Now if visual separation wasn’t applied, there is an issue, which is a bit weird because the airspace at the time presented other options.

Its not quite 20m as there was also lateral separation, however TCAS did go off and the 767 did go around after climbing sharply.

Even if visual separation is being applied, surely flying straight under a landing airliner at this sort of distance can't be a "safe separation". I think estimated to be about 0.6nm by someone on reddit.

I guess we'll need the rest of the context to find out what happened here.

Given most AFFers do not work in aviation, if you use terms like 'VMC", it would be good if you spelt out what it stands for the first time you use it.

Jargon is great for a highly specialised audience but for general usage, no.

It’ didn’t fly under, with visual separation it’s perfectly legal for it to pass it front, with the airliner required to sight and pass behind traffic with no wake turbulence concerns. Again vertical separation is irrelevant in that context.

I wait to see the facts come out because there is a lot of fluff at present, for instance at face value this has non of the same conditions of the previous accident so that occurrence is irrelevant, ie Great day weather vs night, pilot not where he said he was etc.

Will I be looking out the window when I depart HND tomorrow, you bet, the place is one I would not want to work at as an ATC!
