What is the "status credit balance" really for?

Velocity says its the amount of status credits accumulated in the last 12 months from today

The status credit balance is not the same as the number of SC earned since the last review date which is the date of last upgrade, downgrade and maintained level.

The 12 months of the review period may not be the same as the 12 months of the SC balance

The balance is what you need to upgrade to the next tier. That is based on your last 12 months. Your review date is what you need to requalify for the same level.

Well it's great if you can earn enough over and above what you need to gift gold or plat status to a relative.

Yes those statements are correct. As to what is it for - As I understand it the status credit balance determines whether you retain your existing status, or whether you move up to a higher level. If you reach the threshold for moving up - based on your last 12 months status credits earned then you move up immediately (not at your review date) and you then have 12 months from that date to earn sufficient SC's to retain that level. Alternatively if you earn heaps of SC's you could move up to another level again - until you get to Plat which is the highest level. When you get there then your SC earned will determine whether you stay Plat or drop back to Gold.

22.3 Companion Gold Membership and Companion Platinum Membership
22.3.1 These Terms and Conditions apply to Companion Gold Membership and Companion Platinum Membership.
22.3.2 When a Platinum Member earns 500 Status Credits over and above the required number of Status Credits to maintain their Platinum Membership Level (800 Status Credits) within their Benefit Period (total 1,300 Status Credits), the Member is entitled to nominate a family member or friend who is a Member to a Gold level of Membership (Companion Gold Membership).
22.3.3 When a Platinum Member earns 1,000 Status Credits over and above the required number of Status Credits to maintain their Platinum Membership Level (800 Status Credits) within their Benefit Period (total 1,800 Status Credits), their nominated Companion Gold Member will automatically be upgraded to Platinum Membership (Companion Platinum Membership) within 7 days. If the Platinum Member hasn’t previously nominated a Companion Gold Member, then they are entitled to nominate a Companion Platinum Member.


To get companion gold you need 1300 SC in the benefit period. there is no mention of SC balance in the determination of companion gold . But not sure how you can ever get more than 800 in a benefit period because as soon as you reach 800 the benefit period resets and you SC for the new benefit period starts from zero.?? Unless the benefit period does not change once you are WP o allow you to accumulate more SC in that benefit period??

I guess once you attain WP the SC Balance does not really have any beneficial meaning??

Unless you can get enough over and above to gift status to a family member, as previously mentioned.

Alternatively, credit to another program for status to benefit your flying.

Not sure what other's experiences have been, but Mrs Shano's status did not automatically upgrade from companion gold to companion platinum once I got to 1800 SC.

It took a call to VFF to rectify this.
