Hey everyone - looking for some advice!

Wanting to make a few J/F SQ redemptions for November 2018. These flights are about to be available on KrisFlyer. However these flights won’t be available on velocity for another month (they only release 11 months in advance).

My dilemma...have a fairly significant velocity point balance (1.5m+)....only a moderate Amex ascent balance (500k). I would rather use velocity points given I have more of these...I guess do I gamble and wait a month to redeem via velocity? Or transfer over to KrisFlyer and cop the 1.35x transfer cost so that I can redeem immediately?!

I'd do the transfer... you "lose" 26% or so, but your point about the differing availability windows goes a long way towards explaining why Velocity points are worth less.

Yeah I think I knew the answer / that was what I was going to have to do. I really want to secure these F & J flights. So I think I’d rather take the point hit then miss out on the flights.

Wasn’t sure if I was missing something or if someone had other advice/recommendations

One things I've learnt over the past 12 months while trying to redeem flights is that you shouldn't hesitate in booking if the flights you want are available.

Agreed. I have always been ready to pull the trigger ASAP when flights are released in the past. Waiting a month seems way to risky!

What is the actual point difference after the conversion. Depending on the route even after the conversion it can make sense as the velocity points required are generally higher than the SQ points required.

I’m booking a mix of J & F for 2x over 4 flights, works out for me approx. 40k extra velocity points when transferring over to KF rather then holding and booking directly through velocity.

Oh well - don’t want to miss flights. Got our F flight out of Sydney booked last night. Fingers crossed for SQ222 being upgraded to the new suites!

Would be helpful to know what routes you're planning to redeem.

You can book SQ J flights via the VA call centre for Reduced Cost but Reduced Availability, or slug the Surcharge for more availability. SQ F & R, then transferring Vel to KF is a Must - no getting around it

Yes, velocity points required for travel are definitely higher than SQ!!

Really? When starting with a base of Velocity points, as the OP predominately is, I find the opposite. In that it is better to book SQ flights through VA rather than cop the 35% penalty and transfer points in to KF. But yes, if transferring from say MR it would probably make more sense to transfer in to KF where the points required is often lower.

You can book SQ F through VA now, so don't have to transfer. But has to be done over the phone.

But I don't transfer my krisflyer points to velocity, I book the redemption through Singapore Airlines and their system requires less points for the same flight that Virgin require. I have just done it!

Yea as I was saying, that's all good if your points are already in KF or earnt direct in KG. But as per the OP they were starting out with a large VA points balance, so it's a whole different analysis!
