In the true spirit of enhancement of programs as we know it I have just been informed of a change of practice with the velocity program. I rang yesterday to do a points upgrade of a flexi fare to business from CBR to OOL via SYD (no direct flight option).

"Yes, no problem we can do that for you, it is a zone 1 flight so cost will be 4900 points. "

Check my velocity account today and 2 x zone 1 for 4900 points deductions have been made on my account. Thinking it is a simple mistake ring the platinum desk to be informed that this is actually the standard procedure now and an internal memo sent to all staff yesterday confirms this.

That for any multi sector flights using point upgrades or complimentary upgrades you will be charged per sector. I argued that there is no direct flight option except for late at night and basically was told sorry but thats the way it is now but please leave some feedback.

I am aware that the complimentary upgrades T's & C's have always stipulated the per sector rule although it was never interpreted that way but this is a new one for points upgrades. Not happy velocity

It seems to be one of those side effects of the change to Sabre.

With the transition to Sabre, Velocity have moved away from the 'formal connection' idea, where they were seen in some sense as a single thing. Unfortunately, swings and roundabouts come into play. You get SCs per individual sector, but upgrades are also per individual sector.

This change is not yet reflected in the terms and conditions for domestic flight upgrades. If it were me I would call up to complain and ask for my point back.

(For international it clearly says where a flight is more than 1 sector points will be quoted separately for each sector - but this is not the case for the domestic upgrades)

Yes I did that today and advised them there is nothing on the web site to advise of this change. 1 lot of points were recredited after listening to my recorded phone call from yesterday and confirming I was not advised of the change. Thanks Velocity but I don't like this new change at all.

The problem here is the definition of a sector. It used to be origin to destination, which determined everything from points/sc earn to upgrades and all sorts. The system now has changed and a sector is port to port.

I don't like the sound of this new change either but we can't have it both ways. You either earn/burn points/SCs per sector or you don't. I think that's fair really.

Almost everything......except Virgin Money 2 for 1's apparantly!

Velocity Enhancement

So we need to look at our multiple sector bookings and decide which sector is better to access the upgrade seat.

If there is a direct flight option, at a similar time, and you don't take it fair enough. But if you have no choice but to take a multi-sector flight because thats all Virgin offers I think it sucks.

What does Qantas do in this situation?

Never flown with them, so wouldn't know. But i would say, are VA supposed to be a copy cat or leading the way ! As a loyal customer I would hope they would want to lead the way.

Why start now? They have pretty much cloned qantas already

Booked a multi sector Flexi today, rang to upgrade using Complimentary, feigned ignorance with WP line, told it would require 2 upgrade credits. 'thats the way it is now Sir'. Dang!

Can you book multi cities again now? Last time I tried, It wasnt an option

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
