Hi all! I'm flying international business class return with Qantas coming up shortly (bne to nrt there and then kix to syd home). I don't fly business often but used points to fly business for the next two overseas trips coming up.

I'm not strictly vegetarian, but try to reduce animal products where I can and usually order vegan meals in Qantas economy which I've enjoyed. Anyhow, I was thinking of doing the same for the upcoming business class flights but just wondered if anyone has done the same and thought it took away from the 'culinary' experience of it all, or if the meals were just as good quality?

Cheers!

I'm a Indian vegetarian (which means I don't have eggs) and have ordered veg meals in business class.

You can pre-select your meals before the flight via MenuSelect (if offered in the route you're flying). Check this link to see if your flight is eligilble for MenuSelect

In my experience, even if you don't pre-order your veg. meals, the business class meal offering does feature one veg entree and one veg main. However, kindly note that these are vegetarian and not completely vegan.

In my recent QF127 (SYD-HKG) I had the roasted pumpkin soup for entree and a mushroom, tomato, pearl onion & rhubarb savory dish for mains. For dessert had the chocolate mousse with cherry jelly.

Do note that there was no veg/vegan snack options as part of the snack menu - there was a cornish pastry and pork dimsims/dumplings. However, there were almond biscotti & fresh fruit throughout the flight

Thanks so much Ade, that's really useful information. Both flights are eligible for menu select, so I'll look into that too.

You're welcome mate. Cheers :)

Also note that MenuSelect is only enabled 7 days before departure date

Here are the vegetarian options for your flights from the normal menu

BNE-NRT
To start: Moroccan spiced carrot soup with coriander yoghurt
Main: Tomato orzo with zucchini, slow roasted tomatoes, chilli and marinated goat's feta

Before Landing: Roasted vegetable tart with Neil's tomato relish and mesclun

KIX-SYD
To start: Roasted pumpkin soup with croutons
Main: Tagliatelle with sautéed mushroom, spinach, pangrattato and parmesan

Breakfast: Fresh fruit, museli, yoghurt, juices, orange and cream cheese danish (The other hot item has bacon)

Both flights: All the snacks are suitable for vegetarians (potato chips, biscuits, fruit, chocolate etc)

As Ade mentioned, you can preselect the first meal service using menu select up to 7 days out.

That’s incredible, thanks so much! Sounds pretty good to me! :)

The vegetarian meals in business class are usually very good and I would say from my experience that the Asian vegetarian meals are even better. I’ve had some genuinely amazing curries in J when I changed my special meal to AVML (Asian/Indian lacto-ovo vegetarian).

....now Y on the other hand..... 🤣

On Qantas??

Most airlines these days simply serve a vegan meal as the default for all veggie/vegan options. Chickpeas, rice, bit of spinach. Either in a tomato sauce or curry. Combined with a stale wholemeal roll and artificial 'spread'.

I can't remember the last time an airline actually provided a lacto-ovo meal. For the last few years it's been vegan. That includes SQ unfortunately :(

Why is it vegetarians are always presumed to want stale wholemeal bread???

Yes, I’ve definitely had a palak paneer curry on a couple of my QF J flights (and it was goooooood).

Spot on about the bread roll thing though. I just ask for normal bread (and that yum cultured butter). I also send back that heinous vegan desert that they insist on giving us vegos too and get a cheese platter instead.

ha ha (rofl) that's true .. latest Y flight had a pasta, with no sauce, whatsoever, no red or white or olive oil with sauteed mushrooms and raw cherry tomatoes, heated up in a microwave before service.

The tomatoes had burst due to the microwave and that was the "sauce" component in the dish.

What saved the day was, dry, somewhat palatable thyme and garlic bread and a few (read lot) of serving of Sparkling white :) I think it was a Jacobs Creek

of course there was the deconstructed lemon cheesecake - but it was deconstructed, so, yea ... I mean ... we're in a metal tube 33,000 feet up in the air .... :p

+1 brother.

Had palak paneer with lemon rice in QF PE SIN-SYD :D The best curry I've had on a plane so far.

Unless of course if we are comparing it with the paneer, peas and cauliflower curry served in CX J HKG-MAA-HKG, which was phenomenal. It was so good that I asked for another helping of the meal and the crew obliged. It was a not so full J cabin that night, so had some extra vego meals :)

Completely agree with you. The bread tastes like it's lifeless and dry. Which is why, I, most often take my own sourdough bread and goats cheese

The sourdough is a beetroot sourdough from Coles and the goats cheese is from ALDI.

I made a post (link below) on this a while ago, to ask the community if it's fine to take my own bread and cheese on board.
