Hey everyone,

Probably a dumb question - did some google search before posting here. Got some positive answers for the bread, not so positive for the cheese, so thought I'd ask -

Can I take bread and spreadable goat's cheese on board an international flight ?

More details : I've recently fallen in love with the beetroot sourdough by Laurent, made fresh everyday and sold in Coles. I like to pair it with some spreadable Goat's cheese from Aldi. The total price of this combo is roughly AU$8.49 and is a pleasureful treat to indulge in alongside a glass of wine/champagne.

I'd love to take this combo with me whenever I fly so that I could pair with the wine from the flight.

Last night over a glass of wine, I asked my flatmate if I can take bread and cheese on board and he said "Bread maybe, but cheese no", so I got Googling and found that one can take bread (for sure?), but no one was clear on the cheese. Some posts mentioned that one can take hard cheese (say, Cheddar) but not spreadable or soft cheese (say, mozzarella or goat's).

After downing another glass of Chardonnay my flatmate confidently said that "Nah, you can't take bread too".

Can someone clarify, please ?

No problem's at all.
About the only real rule with food on board is it can't stink (and even then that seems to be ignored from time to time), and if it does make it's way to another country be mindful of customs / quarantine requirements.

Edit: and remember, just because you love the stuff, doesn't mean that everyone else will like the smell, so keep that in mind when taking foods on board.

Thank you @harvyk :)

There's a couple of issues at play here. Bread is no issue. The cheese in itself - no issue in terms of taking the product on board.

But... if it is spreadable it would likely be considered a liquid (or gel). This means you can still take it, but it would need to be in a separate container(s), under 100ml each, and contained within your main clear plastic bag for liquids.

Cheddar cheeses and other hard cheeses would not have this same problem.

Thanks @MEL_Traveller. Point noted. I’ll may be take 2 small containers of spreadable cheese.

Oh and this is very important; don't cut the cheese!;)

On a serious note I actually keep the plastic QF cutlery because it is great to use when travelling so if you need to spread your cheese this what to use.

Me too. Sometimes, I ask then FA for another set of cutlery and have it put away for another time.

Just do all-you-can-eat in the Lounge before boarding?

Edit: And wash it down with the champers!

Is it grating you?

The issue of LAGS is quite serious and people have lost valuable food because security personnel have different interpretations depending on their mood.

Aldi cheese being "paired" with airline wine? I hope we're being trolled otherwise Ade has serious reality issues.

As noted by @MEL_Traveller spreadable cheese will likely be considered a LAG and care needs to be taken when planning to take it on an international flight.

@Ade is planning ahead with care and deserves to be treated with respect for their foresight and willingness to seek advice.

@Ade

It depends on the airline. Some frown on PAX bringing their own food.

Qantas, Virgin Australia and most legacy carriers won't have an issue.

A LCC may have an issue as they want the opportunity to Value Add by selling you stuff.
