Looking at hiring a car for the 5 days I'm there.

Prefering to hire without any insurance as I have travel insurance, which covers me for up to $4000 damage.

Has anyone had issues hiring without insurance, like bogus damage etc?

Are you sure your insurance covers you in the same way there? They don't have excesses like we do, so your insurance may only cover that model and not theirs.

I didn't have any issue when I rented through a major over there; reports I've heard tend to be more of a possibility/risk with the lower tier operators than the main chains.

Most travel insurance policies cover the excess to $2-4000 not any damage.The fine print usually says you must take out insurance offered to qualify for this benefit so read carefully.
Renting through most of the consolidators you will see discussed in this forum will include insurance.I use driveaway.Remember LOTFAP is a litigious society.The physical damage to the car may well be the least of your worries.

As others have said, check your insurance for what is exactly covered, the term "excess" may not be all that you are liable for, or your coverage may only cover the amount owing after you take out LDW/LIS/PAI/PEC coverage.

Slightly OT, but I have an annual policy with "Insurance 4 Car Hire", which, in theory, covers the same excess exclusion that the car rental companies offer with their "full" insurance package. I got caught out a couple of years back in Ireland renting from Europcar, and the extra insurance approximately doubled the cost of the hire. I did a bit of web research, and found these guys. The policy costs GBP65 per annum, covers hires globally so long as the hire period is less than 32 days, and you are more than 150 km from your usual place of residence.

Fortunately, I've never had to claim on this policy, so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has any experience with them, and if so, are their any traps?
