I have been trying to book a VA fare with a stopover (only over phone) on the way back from my routing MEL-LAX-JFK-LAX-MEL but the chances of getting it without the inflated price tag is just stupid. Main reason for going with VA/VX on this run was so I would become Velocity Gold. I see plenty of fares for the routing above (minus the stopover) on VA/VX for around $1330 online, but give them a call and apparently have entirely different reservation system and cant give you internet prices, so it bumps up to $1600-$2000. Even worse is that the VA agent couldn't quickly change my dates to hunt out the cheaper fare, she would have to start all over again and after spending hours on the phone working it out, why the hell doesn't VA let you book this online?

I even went to my travel agent and they couldn't even book this fare, as VA have made it too hard for it to be bookable. Let alone the stopover, god help me how you actually get it for free when they cant bring up prices we see...

In the end I just took the easy way out and spent my $1400 on Qantas.com.
