VAtlantic vs Emirates vs Etihad J (vs Malaysia)

Update: Just booked two one way tickets using points LHR SYD October next year on Etihad. Was unable to book one-way with VAtlantic - they only book return. Call staff very helpful, but obviously the only people at the call centre who know what really is going on are those who do the bookings themselves.;)
I tried to respond to your private message, but not sure if it went through as I got an indication that I had not yet posted enough to send private messages. My return flights are actually Sydney - Milan, not Rome, as Etihad doesn't fly into Rome. The tax i had to pay for the 5 return tickets was definitely $1,001. I've recently used points to add a 6th ticket, as Mrs Poikilo decided she just could'nt leave our youngest with family as originally planned. His tax charge was only $70. There is clearly a difference in tax levels between child/economy tickets and adult/business tickets, but not enough to account for the fact that you had to pay more for your 2 single tickets that I dud for my 5 returns. Mysterious.
