Hello FF World
Please help me to work this out with all your combined knowledge as I am a bit a newbie at this FF stuff.
If I can buy 5 tickets on Jetstar for $7100 Gold Coast To Tokyo for cash, does it work out more worthwhile to spend 300,000 QFF points and $2,600 in taxes? Does that therefore mean that I am using my points at an exchange rate of 1 point for 1.5 cents? According to most other posts this exchange rate seem worthwhile. Any thoughts? Thanks

Depends what your priorities may be. 280000 points can get you 1 RTW trip in business or 2 RTW trips in economy. Both of these options would provide much better value (3-4c per point) from your QFF points if you wish to consider some RTW trips at some point.

Also depending on your travel dates, $14xx per passenger isn't too cheap considering you're flying Jetstar.

Similar to what madrooster said. The 'exchange rate' for FF points tends to get better the longer the trip - short haul domestic much worse than medium haul international which is worse than long haul international. But I haven't ever looked whether redeeming on JetStar follows the same 'formula'.

So if you are inclined to do a long trip in the future (and I wouldn't be thinking any more than 1 or 2 years) - hoard your points and spend them then. But is cash is a big consideration (and it is with us all, ultimately ;) ) and this is exactly the type of trip you've always had in mind - then go for spending the points now.

Also check availability of 5 Award seats on the flight you want. Numbers like that tend to see availability issues.
