Hi all,

We’re on VA113 from Adelaide to Denpasar on 27/12. It was sold as a direct flight and has been since the service started on 14/12. I’ve just been advised our flight is stopping in DRE on the way up.
Anyone know why?

Hard to understand why they need a technical stop on 27/12 yet it’s been a direct non-stop service since 14/12?

In the travel / airline industry, "direct" means that you don't need to change aircraft or flight number. The term you're thinking of is "nonstop" which means no stops at all. If the term "direct" was used, the stop in Darwin still meets the criteria.

This used to be a lot more common when "technical stops" were required for refueling in many places - for example flights to LAX from eastern Australia would often stop in places like Fiji or Hawaii and still be sold as direct.

Thank you. It was sold as a non-stop flight. Last night it was non-stop but it looks like it goes via DRW tonight.

Given the situation this is really the better outcome, compared to what Qantas and Jetstar have done in similar circumstances- offloading pax and bags with no warning. Yes it's a slightly increased travel time but not enough to really impact your holiday. It requires extra planning effort and fees for the airline to do things this way, compared to just offloading you, so this is actually the best outcome to the consumer. As noted in the other thread, the reasons for this relate to alternate airport closures and are unplanned and outside the airline's control so it's not really false advertising - they thought they could operate them nonstop at the time of scheduling.
