Will be interesting to see if the code that emails can be used more than once (i.e. for multiple new accounts).

seems the offer has now been withdrawn according to news reports this morning!

I thought it was strange at the time, given Uber is not legal in many states in Australia. Virgin says the offer was not applicable to UberX (the illegal bit).

allegedly illegal...

must have got uber a lot of new business!

only for new accounts of course.

Disappointing - I was going to give it a try. Last week whilst travelling to a Melbourne Cup function one of our party was able to download the app, learn how to use it, book a car, and the car arrived to take half our group - before a taxi arrived to take the rest of us.

The taxi industry needs to deal with it! I use it often (Uber Black, not UberX) as it is much faster, cleaner and easier than a taxi! I waited 20mins at a taxi rank for a taxi one Friday night in Sydney. Got fed up, pulled out the phone and had a an Uber car there within 2 mins.

Speaking to the driver he loves it, cause he never has any downtime. Between regular clients he can pick up short Uber jobs.

In Brisbane and i suspect else where around aus they are running ad's on the radio's stating ride sharing is illegal blah blah and could be criminals as drivers, and only use offical registered taxis

Blah blah, exactly. Can someone tell me exactly how many prosecutions there have been for this "illegal" activity? Personally I think they are fighting a losing battle and about time.

I live in a brisbane, I love Uber x and use it whenever possible. Better drivers, cleaner cars. I don't care it's cheaper to be honest based on my rides so far I would pay more than for a Taxi. Taxis are run down and 9/10 smell so bad I have to stick my head out the window. I hate all this talk about security/safety. Just google "taxi driver, assaults, rapes, ect" to see how safe they are!!!! All Uber drivers get police checks, how is what the Taxi company's do any safer? And let's be honest many cab drivers (not all) are recent additions to Australia so their polices checks are only based on a small amount of time. Yes they needed checks to get into the country BUT many (again not all) come from countries with very limited legal systems where many assaults go unreported and uncharged. Uber all the way!!!

In Singapore I have started using Uber-taxi, which they have been trialling - there are three options now X, Taxi & Black. It seems some of the taxi industry have engaged with Uber, rather than simply fight them, I guess because there is less regulation to begin with. Works well and slight advantage over ordinary taxi booking as you can see how far the car is and so know when to head downstairs from the apartment, and often Uber have discounts.

Neil Ford and his Yellow cab operation in Brisbane (who I'd bet my first born will be the ones funding those radio ads) deserve everything that is going to come down on them in bucket loads .......The very rapid decline in driver skills / knowledge / vetting and vehicle presentation / cleanliness / soundness of Yellow cabs is ongoing at a rate of knots IMO.
Their 'Silver Service' operation is good and I use that fairly often for very early morning 'home to airport' runs, using the same driver / vehicle regularly (but of course there is premium fee attached).
But their run off the mill Yellow cabs standards have just fallen so much in the past 4 to 5 years from a fairly decent base cab standard in the past.
It's now a last resort to get in a Yellow cab in Brisbane for me.
Perhaps Mr. Ford and his crew could better spend their money improving there own operations standards as opposed to putting ads on the radio bagging the new kid on the block.
What is it they say ...... "you reap what you sow" ?

Yet another example of Australia being run by vested interests rather than for the benefit of the people. The taxi industry is just one of the more egregious examples.

well said! I only disagree with your comments on Silver Service. Maybe you have been lucky or I have been unlucky but in many cases of have not found the cars or drivers to be much better and certainty not a premium service level

I think I have been lucky (no very lucky) ......but what's going on here with the radio ads etc has tipped me over to the point I'm now going to give Uber a go.

I love UberBlack and am a frequent user, however I have never used UberX... I am however getting ridiculously frustrated at the bad reporting brushing 'UBER' as illegal, not simply the X service.

There are absolutely FRIGHTENING statistics about the percentage of sexual assaults on young women by taxi drivers ( I know this through family police contacts) that I have no doubt even UberX would be safer than a late night taxi trip.

Also: Mini Rant, Super disappointed Uber doesn't offer the premium Black service in Brisbane, was hoping on using it next week. Will have to book a car :/

I was talking to my Uber drivers in the US last month and they were saying how strict they were with background checks on their drivers unlike the taxis which were often driven by ex-cons! They would say that though, wouldn't they?
