VA Gold member complimentary upgrade

Silly question but I have to ask. I'm a VA Gold member, hubby is a Silver member. I've got a complimentary upgrade to use by August. We're going to Melbourne in a couple of weeks and if I use my upgrade what are the chances (besides none :D ) of hubby being able to get an upgrade as well. Seems a bit unfair for me to sit in business and him in cattle.
 
You would need to use points to do an upgrade, very little chance the upgrade results in two upgraded seats.

Mine is a JASA which gets me over the Platinum line. SWMBO is already there and as her year ends in June there is no point in wasting the points or $'s.

I'm sure she will take my J seat on the Sunday return and I will get 4D!

And obviously what is said on AFF stays on AFF otherwise I won't have any balls! :)
 
Not once been upgraded in the past year with near 140 flights on VA, most of them on a flexi fare.
But then again some people get lucky so all you can do is ask.

You lot are far ballsier than me... Anyway, onto my actual question, along similar lines so not totally OT.

Is the comp upgrade available on Trans Tasman services, or only domestic? Reason being, mine is also due to be used by August and I'm currently going through the throes of AKL or PER? If its not TT, then I'll definitely choose PER. Personally I'd prefer AKL, but at this stage I'll take any upgrade!
 
How come I dont have a complimentary upgrade? Lol, Is this something all gold/plats get.....looking to purchase flexi fares for myself and three kids, will I get a lovely upgrade?

All platinums definitey get 4 complementary upgrades per year but they are noted in your velocity account. If you were gold at the time you would have gotten a "bonus" one around Xmas last year. General advice is that if you are only purchasing the flexis for the upgrades call over the phone and check availability. 4 on the one flight can be hard to score.
 
My previous experience. Could only get my wife a business seat using points and I was in Y flying for work on discount Y (as per travel policy). At checkin made sure there was an empty seat next to my wife as J cabin had only 3 guests. Upon boarding asked the CS would it be possible to sit next to my wife giving short explanation of our predicament. 1 minute later CS moved me from row 4 to business seat.
Made my day and provided apropriate feedback via vrigin feedback .

Huh. I've actually put in a complaint about this happening - watched a FA op-up two of their friends after take-off. (Friends? FAs don't kiss passengers). I don't consider your employer's choice to fly you in discount Y to be a predicament.

Golds don't get complimentary upgrades I'm afraid. This is only a Platinum benefit.

I ignored that only because it was a one off. Didn't want to confuse the norm, which is possibly the case already for some that got them.
 
I have a related question.

I'm SG and would like to use my complimentary upgrade on a flexi fare purchased yesterday for BNE -> PER on the weekend. I don't have any choice about which flight to go on, and I was very excited at the thought of actually being able to use my complimentary upgrade.

The very nice lady on the Velocity Gold help line told me that there's no Z class availability for that flight, so she couldn't process my upgrade. She suggested I call back if I'm feeling lucky to see if availability has appeared between now and the weekend, although I'm assuming that a Velocity reward search for business seats on that flight will tell me the same thing: currently no business reward seats available.

Is there any way to get an alert should Z-class availability become available, without signing up with ExpertFlyer or a similar paid service?

The chances of me actually getting another flexi ticket before my complimentary upgrade expires are rather slim; it only happened this time because the 'cheapest fare of the day' was actually a flexi ticket on VA.

Try using it at the lounge on the weekend. As I understand it there doesn't need to be Z availability in this case. Just need to request it at least 45 minutes before departure.
I did this successfully last week in the Melbourne lounge for two people 45 minutes before departure.

Expertflyer does not list VA Z inventory either so that won't help unfortunately. They are doing in lounge upgrades with points though now so perhaps they could use the complimentary ones also.
