Competition is heating up in the extra legroom space! Increased carry on also it seems.

Monday 2 February 2026: Virgin Australia has today launched a domestic sale on its premium extra-legroom Economy X seating, with upgrades from just $15* (per person per sector) - reinforcing that when it comes to extra comfort, more space and priority perks, the original still does it best 😉

The month-long ‘Extra Comfort, Zero Imitation’ Economy X sale, available to add to Virgin Australia domestic flight bookings here until 11.59pm AEST Tuesday 3 March 2026, is making premium extra-legroom Economy more accessible for travellers.

First launched in 2017 as part of the airline’s ongoing focus on innovation, Economy X continues to set the standard in extra-comfort Economy travel, offering up to 40 per cent more legroom, priority boarding and dedicated overhead locker space.

Commentary from a Virgin Australia spokesperson:

“We’ve always believed Australians want choice, value and a better experience in the air; Economy X has been delivering exactly that for years so it’s no surprise others are now taking notice.”

“We’re continuing to showcase just how wonderful the Economy X experience is for travellers, from priority check-in and boarding to preferred overhead locker space, while offering the best-value extra-legroom Economy seating in the market from just $15 per person,” they said.

While other Australian airlines are only just catching up to Economy X, innovation has always set Virgin Australia apart, with the airline consistently delivering first-to-market initiatives designed to give travellers more choice, comfort and value. These include being the first Australian airline to launch online check-in, Pets in Cabin flights on eligible domestic services and baggage tracking.

Year-round, Virgin Australia offers Economy X upgrades from $15* (per person per sector) for domestic flights and from $58* (per person per sector) for short-haul international routes, reinforcing the value the airline brings to Australian travellers wanting more legroom without the premium price tag.

I wonder if they'll copy QF and make it free for gold within 24 hours or even 3 hours before the flight (when lite fare seat selection opens)?

If they do that then there's one less reason to retain WP...🙄

I dunno, my experience has been that most of those seats are usually snapped up (either by Plats or paying customers) before check in even opens, especially on the longer flights. I'm a Plat and I always select my seat during booking or immediately after booking. I don't see the harm in letting Golds have whatever is left at the 3 hour mark, if there's any left.

IMO no thanks, it used to be common pre the removal of row 5 as economy x to get a shadow, now economy x is way too busy. Economy X is definitely becoming a watered down perk of platinum/platinum plus
