I'm looking at the innovative use of a NRT origin DONE3 fare which effectively will get me a trip to Asia, a separate trip to North America and finally a separate trip to Europe. The in-between commuting I'll do by a mixture of QF award flights and VS points.

I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of general availability using VS points on NZ. Specifically I'm looking at SFO-AKL-SYD in 05/2008 and SYD-AKL-SFO or LAX in 08/2008. Of course, I'm not ready to try to book the SFO-SYD leg yet and I know it's too early to book the second trip. I should be able to do so 11-12 months in advance. Using dummy dates is there any way I can check on EF to get a warm feeling that what I want to do is likely to be achievable? Into what class do VS points book on J NZ?

I'm anxious to get a good feel for it before I commit to the DONE3 because I don't want to find that I can't use my VS points and have to fork out real dollars to get to and from the SFO stopover.

Hope this makes sense  It does to me, but then it would, wouldn't it!
