Can any of my learned collegues out there please tell me if it is possible to use QFF points on other partner airlines such as BA?

Only if you book through QF. Your flight will be a codeshare. You cannot use QFF points to upgrade on non QF metal.

Here is a complete list of QFF partners you can use you're points with for air travel.

Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Award Flights - About Award Flights

Just be aware though, you must be booked onto the flight number of the carrier you are flying with (ie, their metal)

Qantas FF T&C's said:
Award Flights are not available on Codeshare Flights unless otherwise specified by Qantas. Award Flights must be booked using the airline designator of the operating carrier unless otherwise specified by Qantas.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
