Using Qantas Points Bid to upgrade.. have you used successfully???

I'm really interested to hear anyone's experience (and importantly success!!) in using the points to get an upgrade??? I'm travelling from HK (on points) and thinking of putting in a bid to upgrade
1) Have you used points bit to upgrade successfully?
2) How many points did you need to bid to be successful?
3) Do you have any "strategies" ie bid exactly 7 days out... or just wing it and cross fingers???
