Using 500 mile upgrades for companions

I'm AA Platinum, and I know that 500 mile upgrades can be used for upgrading myself and a travelling companion - but what if I'm already booked in F and my companion is in Y? Obviously that means we're in separate bookings.

Can I still request an upgrade for the companion?

Apparantly you can from what I have read recently; phone AA and you should be able to arrange it
