Use points to pay for transactions

Something new (well, I think it is new!) has appeared on the MR site. You can now use MR points to credit your Amex account for transactions.

Burn rate is horrible : 1000 points = $7 - but not unexpected.

Is this new, or have I just not seen it before?

You can also use it for currency at an Amex travel money exchange but you would be mad I think I got offered $2k for 200k points!! Er no thanks that's almost an upper class return to London with VA

And I don't want a 50" tv for 250k points either when I can get it in JB hifi for under a grand
