re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

I think the AA program is going to pretty much mean 'bye-bye' to AU-USA redemptions for reasonable prices. Going via asia is going to be two awards. I suppose Fiji Airways and HA open up. But it's not quite the same as CX/JL.

and continue hoping for random people cancelling QF awards!

March 28 is the planned conversion date of the two programs

I think I'm going to run out of time to use the 260k in my account, only really wanted to do a return trip in J for to Europe and back so not too fussed.

Have 30k in the Wife's account.. was going to try for a GUM or something but don't know if I can be bothered.

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

I'm going back to my original routing for USA flights... Jetstar to HNL and Y/KUPPs from there. Back to platinum for a few bucks again!

I think this is a great idea, been looking at doing this with QFF points to HNL and miles or pay to and within USA/CAN, the best bit is its so much more flexible in flight city choice.

USDM & AA account balances to convert next month

I have to say that I am looking forward to the merger. 50k each way to Africa and South America and 45k/60k to Middle East (QR &EY) are great value. You can book the connecting EY/QR flights with VA/QF points onward to Europe.

there are some 'good' deals... Australia to (SE) Asia drops from 90K return to 35K each way (Japan/Korea stay the same). It's Australia to USA that's going to disappear in terms of CX/JL itineraries, which will be much more expensive. Europe F increases slightly to 160K, no real biggie... but... annual mileage limits will bite hard, and quick.

Wasn't aware of the 35k OW to SE Asia (assuming BKK?), that could work for getting cheaper revenue fares into Europe. These will have to be booked over the phone though considering most likely availability is on CX?

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

You have a few QF options and BA available online into Sin Hkg etc.

all of Asia Region 2 is 35K miles one way in business class: https://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/redeemMiles/all-partner-chart.jsp

However - note that routing restrictions apply - so GUM is probably off the list!

Asia zone 2 is defined as:
Asia Region 2

  • Bhutan
  • Brunei
  • Cambodia
  • China
  • Guam

  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia

  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Saipan
  • Singapore

  • Sri Lanka
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

Japan/Korea as in Asia 1, 45K each way or 60K in F

Cheers for that, that works quite well for us as we use USDM/AA for Business travel to/from China every weeks weeks. Always good for the price to go down!!

indeed... except for the annual mileage limit, which unless they change it, is going to restrict travel to a single trip per year (or less for europe).

LM is excellent for China... non-stop business for AUD1500 return. with good availability (multiple seats, multiple days). beats the pants off anything CX can offer via Hong Kong, and beats the current QF offering of angled beds. and of course with little restriction on mileage purchase (especially with co-pay)

This means no JAL options to Asia 2 as that would transit Japan which is a higher region and thus not allowed.

Although Asia 2 requires fewer miles you are pretty much entirely limited to CX and MH (noting many people avoid MH). QF availability to Asia is almost non existent and as above JAL is not allowed. Star Alliance (so, through LMs) in comparison has much, much better availability as it is covers Asia (both North and South) extremely well with so many members based there (OZ, BR, SQ, TG, CA, NH etc).

re: USDM & AA account balances to convert from March 28th

Note that AAdvantage one way SWP to Europe in Business is 60K ... was looking at this yesterday and saw plenty of SYD-(QF)-xHND-(BA)-LHR for that 60K and USD336.

What month was that for?.

January 16th and later ...

.... on looking back, that's down to Jan 19th and later. Also, quite a few days in November and December for both First (mainly QF9 [80K AA + USD60]) and Business.
