In LAX the other week, I picked up a brochure about in-flight Wi Fi.
It wasn't available for the flight i was on, but would've been very handy as there seems to be a distinct lack of net access if you don't have lounge access.
In short, the in-flight Wi Fi works with smart phones & other hand-helds with Wi Fi (and of course laptops). Coverage is coast to coast across the US.
It seems American Airlines is the first airline up and running, with Air Canada, Delta, United & Virgin America to follow (Virgin has map of avail flights, but it wasn't clear - to me - if it's in operation yet).

At approx. $20 Aus, not too bad in my books for a long flight or for business travelers!Gogo is currently available for $12.95 on select American Airlines flights between the following destinations.
New York (JFK) to / from San Francisco (SFO)
New York (JFK) to / from Los Angeles (LAX)
New York (JFK) to / from Miami (MIA)
