I am planning a trip to US and Canada in late March 2020 for 4 weeks with fews destination in mind like

LAX 2 week
New York
Canada both Toronto and YVR then back home to MEL from Canada .

looking to plan for a large family of 8 people . With 5-6 paid Y tickets and 1-2 J award if possible . With US return fare under $1,000 mark . I am not sure whatis the best routing i can take .

depends on what ff pts you have or have access to.

When flying out of LA, remember there are 5 major airports. Apart from LAX, there's BUR, LGB, SNA & ONT, plus 2 hours drive down road is SAN.

You might be getting close to Easter holiday ???????? (if not outbound, inbound)

& school holidays

Do you all have to fly together ?

If cost is major concern, then if can't get J award tix, then look at flying something like FJ.

IIRC FJ fly an A330 MEL/NAN on Saturdays 21 & 28 March in daylight which connects with their brand new A359s (many of the other FJ flights MEL/NAN are red eyes).

IIRC you can bid to upgrade from any economy fare to business class, as long as an FJ ticket & not NZ, QF, AA, AS. An option option is to stop for day or 2 in Fiji.

As for flights in north america, plenty of ways of using ff pts to get from LA (5 airports) to NYC (3 airports) & to Toronto(YYZ) & even YYZ/Vancouver(YVR)

Lastly, many people borrow ff pts from relatives/friends (they might have to call you cousins) & pay them back after their trip, when they've earned ff pts from paid flights

Just had a really quick look at availability of cheap seats MEL/LAX nonstop late March & back 3 weeks later. You might not get 8 seats sub $1000 on same dates, unless you fly United, the airline of last resort, who also have a very poor ff program. Should always take ff pts into account.
