I can't seem to find much recent information on this forum for the best place to convert $AUD to $US in Melbourne, so I did a bit of a ring around & web search today. F.Y.I. The bank rate was listed at 0.986 (according to my desktop widget) and the conversion rates were as follows:

Travelex 0.943
Commbank 0.937
Aust Post 0.944
KVB 0.97
Nationwide 0.965
UAE Exchange 0.966

The rates do not include commissions payable.

Went to KVB Kunlun Melbourne today. Bank rate was 0.988 (xe.com) and received 0.976 - pretty happy with that (as much as I can be, considering I've watched it all the way down from 1.09). Travelex was 0.9512. Nice offices. Nothing like the Kodak shops in Bali or money changers in Thailand - ha ha.

Sometimes it's a bit hard to google threads on this site, but it's generally thought that KVB Kunlun in Syd and Melb offer the best rates, followed by UAE exchange (in most other cities, too). Better than either is changing money in SIN if you can, and overall winner is the 28 degrees card if you are happy not to use the rate of the day and find a working ATM in the airport.
