If you already have an Aussie Amex and need more sign up bonus points or would just like access to the excellent US Amex card offerings you could look at applying for a US Amex through Global Transfer.

There are various card types and except for the free cards all cards have no forex charges so can be used in OZ or elsewhere at no cost!

Another benefit of having a US AMEx MR card is you can transfer your MR points from OZ and benefit from the arbitrage.

If you have a friend or relative in the US you can use their address or a mail forwarding service.

Unlike Oz you can receive sign up bonuses for every amex card you apply for - once in your lifetime.

If you use my referral link :REWARDS FOR YOU AND YOUR FRIEND

I will receive 10000 MR points for every successful application.

You will receive 30000 MR points if you apply for the green card.

There are many other cards available to be applied for and the sign up bonus varies.

The Hilton Aspire and Gold card are other good cards.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I can guide you on process.

There is an entire thread on this forum on this subject: Strategy to obtain US Amex.

The Gold card is an excellent card and currently has a sign up bonus of 60000 MR points ( usually 35000) and you can earn 4 x points at restaurants. Annual fee on ly $250

Bonus on at the moment . 50 K sign up points for the green $150 AF and 60 k for the gold$250 AF . Let me know if you have any questions

There is a thread called Strategy to obtain US Amex if you would like more info !

Hi Black Sultan - not sure if I should post there here or in the Strategy thread, but figure it's so technical in that thread, this question might be better here.

Are you saying above that when you transfer points to US, that it's a 1:1 transfer, therefore benefitting from better airline transfer ratios in the US? (I assume it's easy to transfer your points from AU to US rewards programs)

Also, when I asked a question about the costs of having a US card sometime ago, I think you said it was circa 0.05% cost to repay Aust purchases in $US (without ForEx fee), but I assume there's also the relevant eg, OFX (or other platform) transfer fee for each payment (eg, $15 - $20) --- of course, it may pale into insignificance if making enough transactions on the US card.

Hi bell ,
If you have 2 oz MR points at 2:1 ration they convert To 1 airline ff mile . However if you transferred to the US MR depending on the conversion rate used those 2 points would convert to approx 1.5 US MR points which could then be transferred out @ 1:1 earning you approx 1.5 airline mile .
If u have a us checking account ( if u don’t you can now easily open one thru hsbc premier ) you can transfer to it for card payment for a small fee of approx 1$ . If not every card payment u make using xe transfer will cost you $20

Thanks very much Blacksultan! I will look into HSBC premier. That's really interesting re conversion rates for points --- I'd never even thought it was possible to transfer between Au and US MRs - that's what I love about this hobby - new wrinkles one has never thought of! --- can you transfer back and forwards between the different MR systems, should you wish to? (as they'll each have different reward partners)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hi guys,

In recent times I have been using Rakuten for cashback on many of my purchases. What sets Rakuten apart from many other cashback companies is that you can elect to receive cashback in the form of Amex points (US Amex which can be transferred to airline partners at 1:1).

For instance, if you are buying something from a merchant offering 3% cashback, you can elect to receive Amex points and get 3 points per $, which I personally find more valuable than cash.

The important thing to note is that to receive Amex points as cashback, you need a US issued Amex card (can be any card) and then have this card linked to your Rakuten account. It is not necessary to pay for your purchase with this card, just needs to be linked.

Generally, new members get $10 cashback when they sign-up, but right now and until the end of the year, this has been increased to $40 when you sign-up through a referral link and spend $40. I have been using it for a few months now and have found it extremely good.

Below is my referral link if anybody would like to sign-up (we both get $40 back).

I use Rakuten for all of my hotel bookings with Marriott, Hilton, IHG etc, so if you are looking for a way to spend $40, that is possibly one of the easiest options. Then there are companies such as expedia, Hotels.com , Booking.com etc. So it shouldn't be a problem to spend $40 and get the same amount back as cashback.

Remember, the initial $40 cashback will be in the form of cash, you can then switch the earning option to Amex points for all future transactions.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I will throw in my 2 referral links from my 2 US Amexes. I will receive 30000 points if you apply for Amex Gold Charge Card and 15000 points if you apply for Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card. Happy to answer any questions.
I have had the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card for over 2 years and love this card due to 15 Marriott elite nights and $300 Marriott Credit. You also get 50000 point free night each year after the 1st anniversary and 100000 points when you 1st apply. At the moment you get automatic Platinum elite level for 2021 and additional 25000 points on 1st anniversary. I applied through Global Transfer. I do have a local US Wells Fargo Acccount which I opened intially while I was in US. I use transferwise to send money to my Wells Fargo Account and Amex deducts payments from US account.
I applied for Amex Gold Charge Card last month using Global Transfer again. I got call to confirm my name, address(us) and my existing Marriot Card and was then approved without any issues. The current offer is for 60000 Amex MR points.

Would like to get the Marriot Bonvoy card but not sure how to apply for US cards. Can you dump the process down to simple form. How can they credit check me when i don't have any US identification, etc?

It’s not straightforward but simplest is to set it up using Global Transfer service if you already have an Aussie Amex of some standing (ie didn’t just set it up a few weeks ago). They use your history with Amex Australia as your credit history with Amex which is why you need about a year’s history with Amex first.

Need a US address and be able to prove it eg US bank statement or utility bill.

There’s more to it than that but that’s the gist of it.
