Hi All,

I am planning a family holiday to the States in August and as you may guess I cannot use my Qantas frequent flyer points as there are no return flights when we would like to come back.

If any of you are pyschic out there, any idea if/when there maybe a decent sale on for flights to the US?

I am interested in trying VAustralia as my loyalty to Qantas is waning each time I try to use my points.

Thanks. ;)

Have you tried using points from Aus, and paid ticket on your way back or looking at alternative routes either via Japan or NZ.

Currently QF return is around $1882 ex Sydney, if booked an paid for by March 3

Would be surprised if VA/DL/UA didn't launch sub $1200~ fares over the next few months for August. They only go up to June at the moment, but surely one will budge. Qantas generally just follows suit.

But then they have been mentioning price rises, so mabye they will just sit around $1400 return for the time being.

Travelling to the US in August will be shoulder season (ie between high and low season), so don't expect anything substantialy cheap unless the airlines decide on another round of discounting.

Thanks for your input.
Yes, I have been checking out over on points and buying on the way back. Have also checked out via other routes but going via NRT drags it out another day and expense.

Thanks again.

Cheers

How about Qantas FF tickets to HNL (will be much cheaper than LAX) and then paid tickets to SEA/SFO/LAX or wherever (SEA is cheaper). Will cost approx $400 USD per person.

Air Pacific from LA to SYD is $740 USD in August, not a bad option/alternative. Award flight availability also veries with status, if one of you party has Gold or better the should see more seats available.

I did a search and looks like V Australia is offering one of the lowest prices:

SYD-LAX return $1431 (incl tax) - direct flight.

I reckon this is pretty good.

One of the cheapest "non sale" ways is Jetstar to the big H, then you've got some reasonably priced choices.
