Apologies if there is already a thread about this but I can’t see one.

I am very likely required to fly NTL-BNE tomorrow due to my grandmother being given days to live. There is a J seat on a 717 tomorrow afternoon which I have my eyes on.

i still have to get clearance through work etc, so just wondering does the classic rewards free cancellation go up until scheduled departure time or is there a cut off time? I can’t find this information anywhere on their website.

At some point the flight comes under 'airport control' - I think a few hours prior to departure (this is when the phone help line ceases to be able to help anyone with changes), so I doubt rewards would be available after that; don't know of any prior cut-off, but may well be, sorry.

sorry I mean can I book it now and cancel it up until departure?

I couldn’t find it in T&Cs either, but was told by a callcentre agent last month that free cancellation is until check in closes.
Best wishes given the situation

I recently had the same question - here is the response from @sudoer :

Thanks @serfty for confirming as well!

Regarding your work, can’t you just inform them that you will not be there for a few days due to the medical prognosis of your grandmother?

Under the circumstances, I would just go, and the rest can be sorted out later.

Domestic reward bookings can be cancelled up until scheduled departure time of the first flight in the booking.

There is a refund of $$$ & points less the 6k point award cancellation fee.

Currently Qantas are waiving that fee.

Confirmed with work so I am flying this afternoon.

NTL-BNE doesn't seem to be selling well in J, expert flyer has Y9 and when I selected my seat all 12 were available!

inform them that you will not be there for a few days due to the medical prognosis of your grandmother?
My employer has generous provisions for compassionate leave (in addition to annual leave) but I still have to ask. It's not a right. I got it though and I was on annual leave from this weekend through to January anyway so only needed two days.

Good news. I hope that the application/approval was just a formality.

Thank you all once again for your help. My Grandma died in her sleep tonight, after I was able to see her twice yesterday and today. I was originally planning on driving to Brisbane today after work for Christmas, and had I waited until then I wouldn’t have made it.

I’m very grateful I made the decision to fly up on Thursday as I did - and also that this happened now when the QLD border was opened. I know many other families have not been as fortunate this year.

Condolences to you @justinbrett
Glad to hear you were able to spend some precious time with your grandmother before her passing.
May she RIP.
