Is there a risk of not getting a choice of meal when flying on the upper deck on a QF 747-400?

Does the upper deck get served last?

How many flight attendants upstairs?

Would the service downstairs be better?

thanks

Certainly not from my experience.

Upstairs has it's own galley with own meals... no carrying meals up from downstairs!

They have always had a minimum of 2 FA's upstairs when I have been up there, but a third FA seems to appear and help serve the main meal (breaky SIN-LHR, and LA-SYD)

In my experience, upper deck meal service usually starts at the rear and moves forward. But as noted above they have their own galley and meals, so its not a race between upper and lower deck. QF is very good at getting the meal quantities right in J and it is unusual to run out of a meal option. However, it does happen sometimes as they can never predict just how many fish lovers vs beefeaters there will be on any particular flight. If you are concerned, then go for the rear section of the upper deck rather than the bulkhead at row 11. I don't think I have ever been told my meal preference was not available in J on QF, though I am sure it does happen sometimes and has been reported here (stand by for all the "it happened to me twice" responses that will always follow such a statement).

As per the other posts, service upstairs is independent of service downstairs.

I've seen the FA walk around taking orders based on status rather than back forward, but have also seen this method used.

Havn't had an availability of food problem, but did have quite a funny experience. The door handle to the heater/oven had apparently fallen off after putting the steaks in to cook. The situation was explained to me, and I was told that they'd do their best to sort it out.

Sure enough, I ended up with my steak. No idea whether it was the original one that was meant for me, or one borrowed from another stash.

This was the case on my last QF flight upstairs (quite recently). Not sure whether it was in the cabin as a whole or just my row. There were four of us across and orders were taken:

ACEF
1324

A little strange I thought. Ah well not long until OW Emerald :)

Very strange indeed .... QF 744 upper deck seating is labelled AB + JK. On the lower deck, business class is labelled AB + DEF + JK.

I knew someone would pick up on that :p On QF I dont normally sit on the right hand side of the plane whereas I do on CX.

Interestingly on most of my recent flights it has been LHS on QF, (some) AA and BA whereas as it's mostly RHS on CX...

CX upper deck is labelled AC + HK. CX Lower Deck business class is labelled AC + DEG + HK.

CX ensure the aisle seats and window seats are labelled the same in all classes, which does make sense.

My preference is always for upstairs (usually seat16A, which is the best J seat on the a/c I think), and I have never had a problem with not getting my choice of meal, or with standard of service at all.

Regarding how the orders are taken, I have only ever seen it done from back of cabin to front, never by status.

Thanks for the comments.

Well if my upgrade comes through, then i will not get to experience upper deck J... but i do get to try F class for the first time.. hehe

Apparently only 6 empty F class seats from SIN to SYD, and I am travelling on a Monday... not much chance of an upgrade right?? We are both QFF Gold.

Have you checked the availability on expertflyer or seatcounter? Is it F6?

Personal preference here but I would always go upper deck without doubt. For me the less traffic and noise is a winner. Much more like a private jet than a huge bus.

Plus on the long trips to LAX I have the excuse of going down the stairs to stretch my legs and take a walk through Economy. Its a good reminder of how good J is compared to Y.

I never walk through Y. Its been quite a while since I have flown internationally in Y, but I am taking the family to the US in September using points, and so will be flying in Y. For this reason I took a look through the curtain on my last flight, just to see what it is going to be like. However, I felt a little uncomfortable with the looks I received from those travelling in there. I imagined they felt as if I was gloating or "seeing how the other half lives" (which definitely was not what I was trying to do). I guess though, that once you get a back a few rows no-one will know that you have come through the curtain.

I also don't walk through Y cabin unless seated there or meeting with someone seated there (or some a/c configs on boarding deplaning through door 2L or shared upper deck). The exception is SQ's A345 which has a ridiculously small passenger "lounge" in business class and much larger one at the back of economy.

I do however, sometimes, use stairs to stretch on, keeping out of the way of any crew.

Perhaps it was the First Class PJs you were wearing at the time that caused the stares from the passengers "seated" in the economy cabin  .

No, I was slumming it in J, and staring in the same way at those dressed in the First Class PJs :D .

Oh, boo hoo... They probably had to walk through J on their way to their seat anyway.

isn't seeing 'how the other half lives' exactly your purpose in this case! ;)

True in a way, but as I am going to be there in September, they cannot really be considered "the other half" ;) .
