UPS 747 Freighter Crashes on Takeoff in Dubai, Kills Two - Bloomberg

United Arab Emirates officials are trying to determine why a United Parcel Service Inc. freighter crashed after takeoff from Dubai, killing both pilots, following the crew’s report of fire in the coughpit.
The Boeing Co. 747-400 was en route to Cologne, Germany, when it went down yesterday carrying two crew members, UPS said. Rescue workers recovered the bodies, the General Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement on WAM, the official UAE newswire.

My thoughts go out to friends and relatives of the pilots.

I have a friend transiting through Dubai this weekend on his way back from Brazil.

I'd heard about this earlier, but hadn't read an article so didn't start a thread. That photo is nuts, though I guess they are bloody big a/c.

Was reading about this last night.

Still a lot of conjecture but apparently on departure ex-DXB developed fire (unclear if coughpit or cargo) about 120mi out, had a missed approach the crashed whilst trying to return for another.

Shocking, a pretty new 744 (2007 built, delivered new to UPS).

Let's hope the investigation is rapid and comes with a clear conclusion.

RIP to the pilots, and wishes to their families, along with any on the ground affected.

Perspective, how about the Fletcher that went in at Fox glacier taking with it 9 lives? The fact still remains that you are more likely to get killed travelling to the airport than in a plane!

I like quite a few others here have been on QF74, and if not QF74, I'd say most of us here have been on a QF 747. Thus it is something that we could have easily been involved in and makes it very easy to relate to.

The UPS plane however, very few if any of the members here have been on a UPS plane, let alone the one that had the crash.

Although I agree with your perspective, its the way the media works out here. You just have to look at Avherald to see how many incidents that are not reported in our media (some of which are much more serious than the problems we witness in our skies and make it to our papers). I think that if this UPS plane did crash in a populated area, you would hear about it a lot more.

Still a crash with loss of life is a tragedy nonetheless, and condolences to the families of those involved.
