I will be travelling to Fiji for two weeks and will stay at Denarau ( hope the spelling is right) for seven nights followed by one of the islands (Another seven nights). Really would welcome your opinion as to which resorts I should consider at Denarau and which island I should consider. Had a look on trivago and booking.com and they don’t seem to cover all possible options. Photos are often outdated so would welcome current assessments based on your experience. I don’t really want to do a heap of things but collapse under a palm tree with drinks service on tap. Also want accommodation surrounded by water, great gardens and comprehensive hotel/resort facilities (eg good restaurants). Any thoughts?

Sofitel looks nice from people's trip reports on AFF but I haven't stayed there myself. I once stayed at the Sonaisali resort near Denarau, which was more 3 or 4 star than 5 star.

I have flights booked for 8 days in May for a milestone event and have also been looking at upmarket island accommodation options. Yasawa Island Resort has piqued my interest the most so far, they featured it on LE 3 or so moths back. I am considering booking 4 nights via the Citi Prestige stay 4 pay 3 - it is on their list. They will only book 6 months out so I am waiting untli December to look into it again and probably lock it in. I received this reply when inquiring direct about getting to the island:

Bula Steady-
Thank you so much for your email requesting information on flights between Nadi and Yasawa Island Resort & Spa.

Unfortunately, if you have a 9a international flight, there is no way to transfer from Yasawa to Nadi that early. You will have to overnight in Nadi the night before your flight.

The easiest way to get to Yasawa is via our daily, regularly scheduled flight. The journey is a short 30 minute flight that departs daily from the Nadi International Airport. and lands directly on our private island airstrip. Your scenic flight takes you along the coast of Viti Levu, and over the turquoise reefs and spectacular islands of the Yasawa Islands group. For our guests, this exclusive transfer is the first of many highlights in your truly memorable holiday at Yasawa.

The daily flight schedule is as follows:
Departs Nadi 2:00p
Arrives Yasawa 2:30p
Departs Yasawa 2:50p
Arrives Nadi 3:20p

Most of our nightly rates include two FREE flight transfers between Nadi and Yasawa.

I hope this is helpful information. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. All of us at Yasawa look forward to welcoming you to our friendly shores.

Vinaka!

Paul

Thank you to Ana and Steady for responding. It’s a start or is this thread to die an ugly death If no one else adds their valuable input. Hoping to hear from others. Don’t really want to rely on photos from websites that might not be accurate\outdated not really reflect the accommodation.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

The Sofitel has an adults only section which is very tranquil compared to the rest of the resort, called the Waitui Beach Club. If you’re not travelling with kids it’s recommended by me.

For the island resort, Tokoriki Island Resort is top notch:

I’ve stayed there a few times, including last month.

It would be one of the best resorts in the world.

I stayed here July 2022. Indeed, it is great for adults and is removed from the other areas of the resort. I found the club to have a better standard of service and quality of food than some of the other Denarau resorts.

A word of advice, whether you stay at the Waitui Club or general hotel, they are running at full capacity which means guests either miss out on reservations at two of the three restaurants (one is a buffet so reservations are easier to secure), or you need to book 3-4 days in advance for a dinner reservation.

Unless you have kids or have an early departure home I would avoid Denarau like the plague. It's very touristy and busy with kids running all over the resorts

haha I sorta agree.

Denarau, we stayed at the Hilton, while a bit older it is more spread out physically, though the food is not as extravagant as Sofitel next door
we did choose Denarau as we had a 3yo at the time but Hilton had one end reserved for adults (restaraunt & pool etc)

The other resorts felt a bit more built-up so yes you would notice the kids more IMO.

we took the Bulla bus a couple of times to Sofitel for the fancier food being accor+ and getting 50% off.

Thanks for the replies and Denarau is definitely out. What other properties would you recommend for five star accommodation on the main island. There are so many resorts dotted around there must be better options.

Personally I would get the ferry out to the yasawa islands and enjoy superior beaches, quieter resorts, better food and comfortable accommodation.

I've been to a few resorts around the main Island (Suva, Coral Coast) and beyond (Mamanuca Islands). Feel free to ask about any resort you like and I'll post my thoughts.

Hi WeeWillyWonka, glad to draw on your knowledge. Depending on flight arrival maybe Radisson Blu Denarau for one night, then Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, or Fiji Marriott Momi Bay, or Warwick Coral Coast, or Outrigger Beach Resort coral Coast. In terms of Islands possibly Lomani Island Resort Malolo Lailai or Castaway Island. Any thoughts ………

While still handy, it is not as good as it used to be. Sadly it is one of a number of sites where the imperative to flog properties and paid tours etc has coloured the impartial advice that one used to get.

Yes it's not just traveller rankings anymore, and I'd do anything for full sized photos!!!

@Stargazer, pleasure. Happy to offer my perspective. Although apologies in advance for the delay in between posts about each hotel due to demanding work commitments.

First, The Intercontinental Fiji. Since visiting in December 2019, room rates have almost doubled in price. The resort feels more 'luxurious' than other hotels in Fiji, but I'm not sure if I categorise it as a truly luxury resort, if that makes sense. The resort markets towards honeymooners and couples, rather than families with children so guests are typically adults.

Because of its location along the Coral Coast, the resort is an hour's drive from Nadi and is secluded from the frenetic pace that you find on Denarau as it is nested within lush tropical vegetation. The grounds are neat, well manicured and the condition of public areas are very clean.

Rooms tend to be classified in two categories: those with Club Intercontinental (CI) Access and those without. Club Intercontinental offers a more bespoke check-in experience (which I feel is more marketing hype than something of substance) but staff drive you on a buggy from the main lobby to CI for this. Rates with club access should (but check) include breakfast as well as a daily hour of complimentary canapes and drinks. I stayed in 1 Bedroom Club Suite with Plunge Pool and the stand out feature of the room was the size. There was so much room, almost too much which sounds like a weird thing to write. Regardless, every room has complimentary mini bar that is restocked daily with nuts, sodas, and chocolates.

The feature of CI is the infinity pool which can only be used by guests with CI rooms (see the picture I've attached from google images which is a good representation of it). It means that the pool was never crowded. This can obviously change depending on the hotel occupancy level at the time of visit.

Speaking of crowds, the hotel has a conference center. If there is a function on at the time of your stay, conference guests overrun the resort and (could) bring their own 'vibe' to it, which would detract from a demure experience. My visit had no event, so the resort felt (almost too) empty but that is certainty not a complaint. I assume that post Covid, the resort is running at capacity so what I've described above may be a thing of the past.

The main pool and beach are not to be understated either. The scenery is stunning and you can overlook the beach while eating at one of the restaurants. I won't pass judgment on the food (it can be very subjective) but the standard of food at hotels in Fiji has greatly improved over the past 10 years.

The hotel is also located near a world class golf course , but I am not a golfer so I can speak to that leisure activity.

If you'd like to know something specific about this resort, just ask. I'll report on the Outrigger Coral Coast in my next post.

Friends recently stayed at the Outrigger Castaway Island and absolutely loved it. I’m keen to try it out at some stage next year

I'm there in May, very heavily booked for more of 2023 already, and we could only get 4 nights

Then off to Nanuku for 7 nights

Our friends stayed in one of the Island Bure’s but he got a couple of pics of the other accomodations and I do fancy the look of those North Beach Bure’s.
I think we would only go if we could book one of them for 3-4 nights
