I have been an AA FF member for about 15 years and have about 180,000 miles with them and have 330,000 lifetime. Anyway, I moved out here 3 years ago and am taking a trip back to the USA on Oct. 30 -- BNE-LAX on QF 175/176.

Here is my problem. I booked through the Flight Centre and didn't realize that some classes did not earn AA miles. My fare is a Q class. Is it possible to pay to upgrade classes? Should I join QF FF? Any advice is appreciated.

Wish I had found this forum before I bought the ticket.

Indeed, Q class on QF is ineligable for miles on AA. depending on your fare rules, you may be able to cancel and rebook on the AA codeshare flight and so earn 100% miles or upgrade to a mileage eligable fare on the QF flight number and earn 50% miles

Failing that, your best bet is probably to credit the miles to QFF rather than have them wasted

Should I join QF FF?
If you join QF FF with an Australian address you will be charged a joining fee. If you join QF FF with an American address there is no joining fee.

The Earth card will give you no Annual fee in year 1 and complimentary QFF membership.. :)

Thanks. I did join QF FF with a US address. I am going to see if it is possible to change the class, even if I pay a small fee. If not I will just claim it as QF FF and chalk it up to a learning experience.

One other question. My ticket is booked all the way to Chicago. The flight to Chicago from LAX is AA, but it is a codeshare and has a QF flight #. Is it possible to claim QF FF miles just to LA, then get AA miles on the AA leg or will it all have to go as QF miles?

If the flight from LAX-ORD is in Q class on the Qf codeshare then it will still be ineligable for AA FF miles. If it is in an eligable class, then you can credit the 1st flight to QF and the 2nd to AA if you wish

Re: Upgrading Q Class

I spoke with an AA agent by phone who said that it did not matter if it was Q class if the flight was operated by AA. I know agents are often in error. Are you confident that I cannot get AA FF miles on Q class on a QF codeshare operated by AA in the US?

Yes. If you are on the QF flight number, then you accrue points in accordance with the rules for QF flights. Since Q is a non earning class, you will earn zero
