Hi everyone,

I just booked flights to the US I was keen to burn some points by upgrading and went to check it out on Qantas.com.

It looks like I can only upgrade both of us? This is not something I am keen to do! to be honest even if I didn't get the upgrade I don't really want to sit next to my friend (yeah yeah call whatever you want but I am used to flying alone!)

Does calling help? wait til i get to the airport? Is it even possible to only upgrade me now?

You can call QF and ask them to split the booking/PNR. This way you will be able to put an upgrade request only for you.
International upgrades are only confirmed 7 days to 5 hours before the flight, if you are not keen to be seated next to your travelling companion I would suggest you select a seat away from him/her right now.

Thanks!

Is there any negative to dividing our booking? Like if there was dramas with our flights. Travel Insurance reasons or anything?

I did similar on a trip to the states with a mate. Booked us to sit together in our paid economy seats, beats sitting next to a stranger for 15 hours, but put in for a points upgrade for myself,
friend had no points so he could hardly complain.
At the first flight check in, in the economy line, I was asked to proceed to the first class counter for my upgrade to Business class on the A380.
The look on his face was priceless...and again when I went into the Qantas Club at SYD airport before the flight.

After the flight I guess he had got over it as he still spoke to me...just as well, we were in the same car and hotel room for the next 3 weeks...

OP, how would your friend feel to see you go left (as some airlines do it/or go down into the gate that says First/Business/into J/F while he/she goes right down the back of the flying sardine can?

the way I did when my friends do it to me.

I can't help it I travel and have a lot more points than him

And you didn't guest him into the J-Lounge?

I don't have any privileges...

If I get upgrade I don't' think I can take a guest can I?

This is what I feel the worst about. Not hanging out in the airport with him.

I could not care less about not sitting with him on the plane cause even if I did I would be attempting to sleep the whole way.

We have a crazy schedule at the other end so we need to hit the ground running!

You do have guesting rights considering you were on the same flight.

Oh this is great news!

Last time I flew with friends who were upgraded this is what went down.

Platinum FF

He and his wife got upgrade. Upon entering the lounge the host took 2 guest passes (the extra ones you sometimes get) off the Platinum FF!

Later we all realized that they should have not taken taken one for the wife cause she was flying business. And they certainly should not have taken one for me as the 'guest'

Question...

When should I or NEED to put the upgrade request in?

I know it is not allocated until 7days prior but is there a first in first served (dependent on status?) type thing?

I also warned my travel companion... he is okay with it!

I think I am going to have more of an issue if i don't get upgraded and i head to the lounge with the pass i got given! (will send him to ebay!)

Earlier the better, especially if your status is low, e.g. Silver. The system would work as follows.

Basically each status level will be done in order of submission from WP1, then WP, then Gold then Silver.

Try to avoid Ebay for lounge passes as they tend to be rip off prices. Have a look in the Free to a Good Home section of AFF - Free to a Good Home.
