I have booked through a travel agent via Finnair 2 seats PER-HKG-HEL and then Prague-LON-SIN-PER in July/Sep 2009. When I booked I couldn't afford Business Class - now I can but the Discount Economy booking is not upgradeable either by cash or points.

Any idea on how to change these flights to Business (or at least the long haul sectors eg LON-SIN)

There's mot much that you can do other than cancel current ticket and rebook ; if current ticket ( as it would sound ) has a 100% cancellation penalty, then it is an expensive activity

i'd say ask the travel agent to speak to the airline for you

with the pointy end fo the plane so empty these days you might fidn they will take the extra $$$ you're offering, and the travel agent will get a bigger commission from it too.

i always find there is no harm in asking, as long as ure willign to hear a no.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

i similarly booked a US trip very very cheaply (per-sfo, O class) and of course fare rules say it's not upgradeable with points.

totally happy with the fare and don't care that i wouldn't be able to but has anyone had luck smiling sweetly in the lounge to get an upgrade with points anyway? or is there any other way of scoring an upgrade (i'm a WP).

If it makes you feel any better try 'reframing' your situation:

1. I couldn't afford J at the time I booked as I needed to ensure I had some travel arrangements in place.
2. At the time I booked it was going to cost $xx,xx_ for the J class fare.
3. Now I can book a J class fare for 30% less than a few months ago and I'm still ahead even though I have to forfeit most of my original fare.

I'm assuming that with the price competition of the past month or so, you may be better off having delayed your J class purchase anyway.
