I normally fly J (US domestic F) on legs within US. Due to change of policy, we now get booked in Y after LAX.

How easy is it to use points to upgrade on AA flights? What are my chances, and how do you do it?

Thanks.

Impossible.
QF pts only good for upgrade on QF metal.
AA EXP / PLATs all ahead of you anyway.
Zero chance AFAIK...

Yo could join AAdvantage, purchase some AA miles for cash (the strong A$ exchange rate helps) and redeem the miles for an upgrade.

What if the flight has a AA number but is QF metal? Any chance?
I don't think so. Look here.

Qantas Upgrades said:
If you hold an eligible confirmed ticket, which may be a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award, for a Qantas operated service with a QF flight number, you can register for an international Flight Upgrade from 90 days to 24 hours before departure from the first port of the flight. Requests for Flight Upgrades will not be accepted within 24 hours of scheduled departure from the port of origin.
