Upgrading from J to F on A380

Hard to imagine how you could regret an upgrade from J to F on an A380 :)

DO IT! At least once. I did it last year. Would I do it again? Probably not, but would depend on points balance, whether I was saving points for a specific goal, how quickly I could replenish the points etc. As Princess F said, HUGE step up form Y to J, lesser step from J to F.

I second this motion. Do it once to satisfy your curiosity you won't regret it.

I've put in for an upgrade next month on QF11. I don't like my chances though. J cabin already 2/3 full and clearly quite a few WP and P1s in J and there are only 4 seats left in F.

Similar experience here. We managed to get into F on a QF12 trip from LAX - SYD and it was a fabulous experience. Being self funded however, we do not see enough benefit to book F over J, it is just now worth the money.

If you have points to burn, go for it, that is what we did. Nowadays though, with being an AFF'er, we use points for other things such as JASA and a soon to commence J 'oneworld' booking.

Enjoy your F experience! :)

Is the F cabin usually full on this route? What are chances of an upgrade with points request from J to F being successful?

How long is a piece of string, loads can vary daily and seasonal issues also come into play?

If you have the chance then do it. Even if only once in your life at least you can say you've done it.

There is a difference and I'm glad I've experienced it through a FASA.

I can only relay my own experience over the past few years.

I'm usually booked in discounted J, ticketed about 2 weeks before flight (therefore upgrade request made 14 to 10 days prior to flight).

As WP I have had the upgrade approved 4/5 times. These days notification seems to come 48 hrs before departure, rather than the ?5 hours or so previously.

When I've checked, the F cabin appeared to have only 1 or 2 seats for sale about 3 days out, and its always been full on the flight.

My partner had a points upgrade from J to F on LAX to MEL flight (Just a little envious ). He was a lowly silver at the time with no expectation of upgrade success so u never know.

A slight "enhancement" of the question posed by the OP:

If it was to LAX, no issue, however, would the replies be just as effusive if the request was for QF12?

My thinking is no degustation menu, no "real" FLounge, but pretty shmick, nonetheless, I guess.

Flew QF12 Lax SYD in July (in my favourite 2A) and enjoyed every minute. Yes I would agree re lounges but it is still a great experience onboard. I like being cosseted and indulged....

By discounted J do you mean like "Business saver" or is there some other trick I'm unaware of ?

Yes I'd do it.

However, I warn you about the F-ing curse (its where J starts to seem like Y).

Best of luck :D

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm considering doing this for QF2 in November - LHR-> SYD (though I'd need to purchase and then transfer 20k AAdvantage miles to do so, at a cost of about $1k AUD) but am doubtful I'd enjoy it over J (which I can already easily book into).

I'm worried I'm just not an F person! :( (First world problems!)

What's an F person? - I am pretty sure I don't fit some fancy mould - definitely not wealthy or society or even big business, but I still enjoy it!

20k of AA miles should not cost $1k, are you a SPG member.

Interested to know how you know that there are "clearly quite a few WP and P1s in J"??
